Founded in 2004, Gateway Pet Guardians (GPG) is a 501(c)3 animal welfare organization leading the industry by investing in people and communities to end the cycle of animal homelessness. By building capacity for animal advocates in our own neighborhood, we increase animal well-being across the East Side Pet District - East St. With help from generous people like you, GPG is able to provide affordable, accessible, quality pet resources and champion a thriving pet welfare community.

Vic has come a long way in his foster home and we couldn’t be prouder.🥳

When Vic came into our care, he was very scared and it was understandable. Vic was left at the shelter, and we weren’t sure he’d trust people again. After going to a foster home, we still weren't sure.

Then Vic met the foster’s resident cat, Zombie, and everything changed. With the other kitty’s guidance, Vic realized he was finally safe.🥹

Vic loves the other cats but more than that, Vic NEEDS other cats in the household.

As far as relationships with humans are concerned, Vic needs a patient person who understands his little quirks.

We think he’d do well in a home with other cat-friendly pets and understanding, chill adults and older kids.

Reminder: The Gateway Pet Guardians Retail Store and Clinic are closed today (Juneteenth), but we are OPEN between 12 - 6 PM for anyone interested in fostering, adopting, or taking a dog on a field trip! Come spend a day volunteering or grab a shelter pet for a weekend slumber pawty!

We also want to emphasize the power of community with this post!

Last month, Gateway Pet Guardians partnered with Banfield Pet Hospital, the Mizzou Veterinary Student Association, and the City of Cahokia Heights to provide FREE vaccines and microchips to local pets.

In just 2.5 hours, we were able to serve 110 pets and help keep them healthy, protected, and connected to the families who love them.

The gratitude from pet owners was overwhelming. Access to affordable veterinary care can be a challenge for many families in the East Side Pet District, and events like this help ensure that pets can stay healthy and at home where they belong.

A huge thank you to our partners, volunteers, veterinary students, and supporters who made this event possible. We are so grateful for your dedication to the pets and people in our community. 🩷

We are already looking forward to hosting another clinic this fall and continuing to bring these important services to families who need them most.

Puddle! Girl we didn't know you had it in you...

We recently learned our affectionate, cat-friendly, litter box trained Puddle is diabolical when it comes to canines.😈

We do not condone bullying at Gateway Pet Guardians but we must admit, for a 7 pound cat, Puddle's intimidation is impressive.

Puddle is chilling in our cat adoption room until her forever or foster family finds her!

We have our regular walk-in foster and adoption hours today and tomorrow.

And on Friday Juneteenth, WE ARE OPEN 12 - 6 PM for walk-in fosters/adopters.

Who said cats were the only ones who could wear a tuxedo - Meet Turk! 🤵🐾💙

This absolute gentleman of a pup came to Gateway back in March, and we have loved getting to know this gentle giant ever since!

Turk is a cuddly, goofy guy with a playful spirit and a loyal heart. 💙 He can be a little shy at first, but once he warms up, his fun, loving personality really shines. 🌟

He loves to play, be close to his people, and will keep you smiling with his silly charm. 😁

This pup has all the manners of a true gentleman:

These donations bring enrichment and happiness to shelter and foster pets, and they’re just one example of the many ways Purina supports our organization and countless others working to help pets in need.

Walk in anytime from 11 am - 5 pm as no appointments are needed and we'll match you with a shelter dog to take on a field trip. Whether it's a walk in the park, a pup cup run, a hike, or just an afternoon adventure, you'll be giving a deserving dog a much-needed break from the shelter.
