The Underground Rabbitry

Of the last four rabbits on the table Saturday at the Missouri State Convention - Gene Rowbotham Memorial Show, 2 were home-bred from The Underground Rabbitry.

In the end BOB went to Emily Kimberling but BOS went to UR Artemis our 3 year old Broken Chocolate Otter. This was his 9th leg. Of note is that his breeding goes back to Laura Dull (Coeus), and Sue Eyler (Gus).

Also of note at this show is that the top 3 Senior Does, two of which are Black Otters, were also from the Underground Rabbitry.

This was only the third show for us this year as I was concentrating on building overall herd quality.

Photos show Artemis yesterday and when he was just three weeks old. Even at that age I could see he was worth keeping. He is pictured on the right beside his litter mate Megara who now resides at Otter Pop Lops with Larissa Kay.

I will be showing my Black Fox Holland Lop at this Friday's, 12/5, specialty show in Sedalia. If you have any Black,, Chocolate, Blue, or Lilacs they can be entered as an Exhibition animal.

At 22 days old these siblings, one buck one doe, are looking just fine.

I analyzed their pedigree back 4 generations and worked out the genetic mix as follows.

25.00% Cody Taylor

Mugla, a first-time bred doe, started gathering hay an hour ago. She was mated with UR Beau, currently on loan from Rachel Gregory. Fingers are crossed.

I was on trip 2 of 3 to pick up my yearly supply of timothy/clover hay this morning from a vendor in Hallesville, MO.

My rabbits absolutely love this stuff. Really. Once I start feeding it in the morning they come to the front of their cages to make sure I don't miss them.

Guess how many small bales fit inside of a Sienna?

Yes, I did climb to the top of the stack to pull bales down.

Outside the rabbitry, in the shade, temp this pm was 101.3. Inside a coolish 78.

Looking forward to showing some Foxes this Fall. A litter of three, now 4 weeks old, all foxes out of Dyan Murphy and Cody Taylor lines.

Periodically I analyze herd production this time using 23 different does and 8 bucks. This summary covers the past 7 weeks which included 20 does kindling and 5 missing their breeding, yielding an 80% success rate.

A total of 82 kits were produced but only 46 or 56.1% survived accounting for those "born dead on the wire" and peanuts who later expired. This yields a production rate of 2.3 live kits per doe who produced a litter. This percentage is consistent with my last analysis.
