Clinical Trial Graduation Alert!

Cali Curtis, a brave and sweet cat, recently completed the HALT study for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy – a common heart condition found in cats. The clinical trial aims to test a medication that will prevent progression of the disease in other cats.

Dachshund fur comes in three varieties: smooth (sleek, short hair), long-haired (wavy, flowing hair with longer fur on ears, chest, and tail) and the wire-haired (coarse outer coat with a soft yet dense undercoat, featuring distinctive eyebrows and a beard). In some Doxies, if you see coat thinning, bald patches, flaky skin or all of the above, schedule an appointment with your vet. Those are not always signs of aging or allergies; they’re hallmarks of follicular dysplasia, a genetic condition Dachshunds often get. While it’s not fatal, the affected skin may be more susceptible to bacterial infections if left untreated.

➡ Bald spots on the chest, belly, or ears
➡ Symmetrical hair thinning
➡ Dry or irritated skin

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽𝘀:
➡ Gentle, vet-approved shampoos
➡ Moisturizing products to soothe dry skin
➡ Sun protection for bare areas
➡ Regular brushing to keep natural oils circulating

There’s no cure for follicular dysplasia, but your Doxie can stay happy and comfortable with good skin care!

The playful, mischief-loving Miniature Dachshund is prone to having a picky palate. Sometimes, they may be scamming you to get treats. However, you should keep an eye on their food intake. Minis, especially those under age 4, may be more prone to gastrointestinal lymphoma. Unlike some health issues, the indicators are often subtle until they become urgent.

➡ Ongoing vomiting or diarrhea
➡ Loss of appetite or unexplained weight loss

➡ Detecting lymphoma early means more treatment options and better outcomes
➡ Chemotherapy can be effective and give your dog quality time you’d never want to lose
