The Suckle Reflex

The suckle reflex begins approximately 20 minutes after birth, and becomes stronger with time. Normal foals nurse every 30 minutes, and failure to suckle is the first sign of a neonatal problem. If the newborn foal does not stand and nurse by two hours after birth, you should consider it abnormal, and consult your veterinarian as soon as possible. It is important to remember that a high-risk newborn foal may look relatively normal for several hours after birth.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER INTRACYTOPLASMIC SPERM INJECTION (ICSI)?
During ICSI an unfertilized mature oocyte is fertilized by a single sperm cell. The fertilized oocyte should start to divide 24-30 hours after sperm injection. Injected oocytes are cultured in the laboratory for an additional 7-10 days. The injected oocytes that develop into a blastocyst can be prepared for transfer into a recipient mare, or frozen for future use.

Check out how beautiful this oocyte is! Collected and matured by the Equine Fertility Institute located at Performance Equine Vets. This oocyte has developed a polar body during the maturation process and is now ready for ICSI. Equine Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (aka ICSI) is a fascinating technique recently developed in horses and now used commercially to produce equine embryos of desired mares and stallions. This technique is proving to be wildly successful for performance mares who can’t take a break from training, broodmares with compromised reproductive tracts, and semen that is limited in quantity or quality.

*Warning graphic photos* We wanted to share a case we recently had and warn against the dangers of Banamine administration in the muscle. This horse was given an intramuscular shot of Banamine for a mild colic episode by someone the owner thought to be an experienced veterinary technician. Two days later the horse's neck was swollen, he was unable to move it, and reluctant to walk or eat. The owner took immediate action once this was noticed and called Dr. Maraman to see the horse right away. Brief diagnostics confirmed a bacterial myositis, or necrotic muscle infection. Treatment was initiated and included anti-inflammatories and antibiotics, but is most aided by surgically incising the muscle to allow air to reach the infected portions. Surgical debridement of the muscle has to be performed periodically, and daily wound management is very important in these cases. This horse is now completely healed, with minimal scarring, and is leading a happy healthy life.

Love em while you got em. Our dear Cleopatra the Egyptian Goose has left the property. We think she needed food, rest and love before continuing on her journey.

Yesterday morning it was 68 degrees and a cool breeze was blowing. The perfect day to hitch a ride and head South.

We hope to see her again some day. What a great experience.

Day 6 and our now resident Egyptian Goose aptly named Cleopatra is happy and quickly learning the ropes at the clinic. Each morning we arrive wondering if she's headed south for the Winter, but alas I believe the organic duck food and personal swimming pool are just too enticing.

Day 4 and "Cleopatra" our Egyptian Goose has a swimming pool, organic waterfowl feed and lots of friends. She seems content for now to live at our Surgery Center. She wanders around the property and all the staff and clients think she's pretty cool.

She's less than 1 year old so who knows what will happen over the coming days and weeks. We'll be sure to keep you posted.

07/15/2019

Correction: A keen eye'd super bird nerd has informed us correctly that it's an Egyptian Goose, a juvenile at that.

Visitor from the sky. No, it's not Dorothy or Toto, but we have a VERY lost guest drop in to the clinic yesterday.

Duck food ✔️. Swimming pool ✔️.

The resident Bird Nerd tells us it's a Juvenile Black Bellied Whistling Duck that is super lost. We're thinking it was kidnapped from it's family pond in St Augustine Florida and escaped from a rest stop on I-95 where it flew till it zeroed in on the refuge called: Performance Equine Vets. Will keep you posted... definitely to be continued...

One year ago today our sweet little Stephanie came into all of our lives here at Performance Equine Vets and the Equine Rescue of Aiken! We cannot thank everyone enough for continuing to support her, who knew this sweet donkey would create a place in all of our hearts. This year she has received continuous treatment from our veterinarians and technicians to improve her leg, including surgery. Jim Rhodes and the Equine Rescue of Aiken has so kindly supported her through all of this and has even provided Wellington to be her best friend.

Stephanie has some exciting updates coming, you will be able to see a sneak peak of a very special something purple in her most recent photos!

We were so happy to be part of this educational day helping our community and law enforcement officers learn a little bit more! Thank you Equine Rescue of Aiken for having Dr. Maraman!

Yesterday we had the opportunity to train law enforcement officers from 14 municipalities on equine cruelty and neglect cases. Representatives from Fairfield County Animal Control and Adoption Center - Winnsboro, SC, Florence Area Humane Society, Greenville County Animal Care, Greenwood County Sheriff's Office, Orangeburg County Animal Control and Shelter, Pickens County Sheriff's Office (SC), Union County SC Animal Shelter, York County Animal Shelter Spartanburg County, South Carolina, Abbeville County Animal Services, Aiken Department of Public Safety, Anderson County Sheriff's Office SC, Charleston County Sheriff's Office, and Chester County Animal Care & Enforcement attended the day-long training which included hands-on horse handling and evaluation.

This training was made possible thanks to an amazing collaboration and relationship between The Humane Society of the United States and Equine Rescue of Aiken with special appearances by Performance Equine Vets and Aiken County Council Chairman Gary Bunker.

The interest, passion, and dedication shown by all the attendees was impactful - when the men and women on the frontline to fight animal cruelty are armed with the knowledge and tools to educate the public and enforce animal cruelty laws, the animals in SC benefit.
