🦷 Why does my furkid need general anaesthesia for a dental procedure? 🩺

This is one of the most common questions we hear from pawrents.

Unlike people, our furkids can't understand instructions to sit still, open wide, or tell us when something hurts. General anaesthesia allows us to perform a thorough oral examination, clean below the gumline, and safely treat any painful dental disease while taking away the stress 💙

At TAC, we’re also well equipped with dental X-ray facilities, allowing our team to evaluate your furkid’s oral health beneath the gumline more comprehensively and make treatment recommendations with a complete picture.

In fact, a large proportion of dental disease occurs below the gumline, where it cannot be seen during a conscious examination. Without general anaesthesia and X-rays, these areas cannot be properly assessed or treated.

A thorough dental procedure is much more than removing visible tartar. It allows us to identify disease, relieve pain, and protect your furkid’s long-term health and comfort.

🐰 Brave Little Suzie 🌷

Suzie came in to see us for suspected dacryocystitis (tear duct infection/inflammation) and was an absolutely courageous cookie throughout her visit 💖

With gentle handling and plenty of patience from Nurse Natalie, she stayed calm and did so well during her assessment. Rabbits can be sensitive little souls, so creating a low-stress and comfortable experience is always something we strive to prioritise.

Eyelid redness, tearing, or loss of fur around the eyes in rabbits should never be ignored, as these signs can sometimes point to underlying issues requiring treatment.

Treatment for dacryocystitis depends on the underlying cause but may involve tear duct flushing to clear blockages, medications to manage infection and inflammation, and assessment of the teeth if dental disease is contributing to the problem. Early treatment is important to keep our bunny friends comfortable and prevent ongoing irritation.

🐭 Jelly’s Toy Story 💩

Jelly came in for some urinary concerns, so we started with X-rays to screen for bladder stones… but instead, we found something unexpected lurking in his stomach 👀

At first glance, it looked like a single foreign object. Thankfully, our clinic is well-equipped with equipment for endoscopy/gastroscopy — a minimally invasive procedure that avoids the need for a full abdominal surgery in suitable cases. This meant Jelly could avoid an invasive foreign body surgery, experience less discomfort, and enjoy a much smoother and quicker recovery 🐾🌟

During the scope, we uncovered what can only be described as a mini toy shop inside Jelly’s tummy 😅 From a poop-shaped toy to Sylvanian Families figures, Jelly had been secretly building quite the collection.

Can you spot the foreign object on Jelly’s X-ray? 🧐

What surprised us most was that Jelly showed almost no signs at all despite carrying some of these items for quite some time. Dogs can be incredibly resilient, and swallowed foreign objects may sometimes remain hidden for weeks, months, or even longer before symptoms suddenly appear.

This is why close monitoring is so important, especially for pets that love chewing or swallowing things they shouldn’t. Early intervention can make all the difference and may allow for less invasive treatment options before a life-threatening obstruction develops.

✨ Recovery looks good on you, Sky ✨

Sky came in for his ear infection review with Dr Felise and made everyone’s day with his happy tail wags and impressive treat-catching skills 🐶💛

Thankfully, his ears are looking much better and he was such a good boy for his ear check and clean!

Follow-up reviews are an important part of treatment, as some medical issues may need a longer course of medication or adjustments to the treatment plan to ensure recovery.

☎️ Triage Talks 🩺

This week, we had another lunch & learn about one of the most important parts of patient care — triage. Our receptionists, newer nurses, seasoned nurses, and vets came together to go through essential phone and in-person triage skills, including recognising red flags, visually assessing patients, and knowing when to escalate cases for immediate help.

Beyond the teaching itself, one of the best parts was the discussion. Everyone shared questions, scenarios, experiences, and insights that sparked meaningful conversations across the whole team. 💙

🐱✨ Patrick Ear Spa ✨🐱
