🐶 Asahi’s Story: Two Hips, One New Life

Meet Asahi — a lively Shetland Sheepdog whose love for park runs masked a serious problem brewing beneath the surface.

Just before turning three, Asahi began struggling to rise from rest. X-rays revealed advanced arthritis and partial luxation in both hips. Referred to Beecroft, he was seen by our Head of Surgery, Dr Patrick Maguire.

Rather than settle for short-term relief, Asahi’s owner Lina opted for a total hip replacement, giving him the best shot at a full, pain-free life.

🔹 First surgery went smoothly — with crate rest, careful rehab, and creative solutions (like trolley sniff walks!)
🔹 Second surgery followed months later when his right hip deteriorated
🔹 Recovery was faster this time — thanks to good stability and early intervention

📈 Today, Asahi is back to doing what he loves — running, playing, and living pain-free.

His story reminds us:
✅ Early specialist care can change everything
✅ Dedicated post-op support makes recovery possible
✅ A trusted vet-owner partnership drives successful outcomes

🦜 A Bit of Discharge. Some Weight Loss. Nothing Too Concerning — At First.

The case begins without alarm. The bird is alert, eating well, and only mild signs are noted such as slight discharge, softer droppings, or a gradual dip in weight. Initial care is provided, and there is some improvement. However, over time, progress becomes inconsistent. What first appeared manageable starts to feel less straightforward. The signs linger, return, or shift in ways that no longer align with the initial assessment.

At this point, it becomes harder to rely on the usual assumptions. When supportive care fails to produce lasting improvement, and clinical progress does not track as expected, the list of differentials needs to widen. This is often where avian chlamydiosis enters the picture — not because it is common, but because it tends to remain unrecognised until other possibilities have been ruled out.

Also known as parrot fever or psittacosis, avian chlamydiosis is caused by Chlamydia psittaci, a zoonotic bacterial infection that rarely presents in a consistent or obvious way. It might mimic a mild respiratory condition. It might seem like a gastrointestinal issue. In some cases, it improves just enough to slip past attention before resurfacing again.

When recovery feels incomplete and the case fails to progress as expected, this is one diagnosis that deserves closer consideration.

🧠 A Pet That Moves Strangely. Eats Less. Starts to Stiffen.

Tetanus in pets is rare, but when it occurs, it escalates quickly. Caused by a neurotoxin released by Clostridium tetani, this condition affects the body’s ability to regulate muscle control. What begins as stiffness or a change in gait might progress to full-body rigidity, difficulty breathing, or seizures.

Because the early signs are vague and the wound that triggered it might no longer be visible, tetanus is often missed until it becomes critical. By the time jaw tightness, limb spasticity, or hypersensitivity appears, the window for early treatment is already closing.

This is a medical emergency that requires urgent recognition and aggressive intervention. With intensive care, recovery is possible. But without it, prognosis declines fast.

🦜 Exotics Insight: When to Refer Birds for Specialist Care

Birds can be rewarding to work with, but not every case is straightforward. Their anatomy, behaviour, and dietary needs often require a level of nuance that goes beyond routine care. Subtle signs, especially in high-risk species, can mask more serious underlying issues.

Cases involving weight loss despite a stable diet, changes in respiratory effort, or suspected nutritional or reproductive disease will warrant further investigation. When the presentation is unclear, or when first-line treatment stalls, early referral can help prevent progression.

At Beecroft Animal Specialist & Emergency Hospital, our avian team works closely with primary vets to support diagnostics, ongoing case management, and species-appropriate care. We’re equipped to assist with more involved workups when needed.

😻Saving a Siberian cat from near-death

When Toobie the cat started vomiting, it was the beginning of a series of events that eventually landed him at Beecroft in a comatose state.

Led by Dr Nadine Jones, Beecroft's board-certified emergency and critical care specialist, an emergency ultrasound revealed that Toobie was suffering from hypovolemic shock and had a large stomach filled with fluid.

The situation was dire for the unfortunate feline. However, our ECC team had a plan.
