🐶✨ Bulldog Drama Alert! ✨🐶

This adorable 5-month-old bulldog pup strutted into the clinic with a suspicious little lump on her chest — and you know us, we had to investigate! Our first thought: “Probably a histiocytoma” (that’s a fancy way of saying a harmless little growth young dogs like to grow just to freak their humans out 🙃).

We tested it, but the results were… unhelpfully mysterious. 🤔 The pathologist recommended removing it to be safe — so off to surgery she went (after soaking up all the cuddles, of course 💕).

Good news: it was indeed a histiocytoma! 🎉 Basically, a harmless overreaction of the skin’s immune cells that often disappears on its own — but sometimes, as in this case, they like to keep us guessing.

💡 Fun facts about histiocytomas:
🐾 They’re most common in young dogs (under 2 years old).
🐾 They can pop up almost overnight, look scary, then vanish just as fast.
🐾 They’re totally benign — not cancer — but checking them out is always the right call!

So our brave little bulldog got her lump removed, a bunch of treats, and a whole clinic full of admirers. ❤️

Moral of the story: when in doubt, check it out — but sometimes, lumps are just a young pup’s way of keeping things interesting! 😄

📦 Stocktake Madness Incoming! 📦

We’ll be closed tomorrow morning while we count absolutely everything that doesn’t move (and a few things that do 🐾).

Don’t panic — the phones will still be answered, and we’ll see any urgent cases!
Just expect a few frazzled faces and the faint sound of someone muttering, “Who moved the syringes?!” 😅

We should be all set to go again around lunchtime.

🩺💚 It’s Vet Nurse Awareness Week! 💚🩺

This week we’re celebrating the absolute legends who keep our clinic running — our incredible vet nurses: Karen, Simone, Lhani, Dot and Adele! 👏

They’re the ones who:
🐾 Cuddle the anxious pets (and sometimes the anxious owners)
💉 Place catheters, monitor anaesthetics, run blood tests, clean teeth and clip nails
🧼 Scrub the surgery, mop the floors, and still manage to smile through the chaos
💬 Translate “woof” and “meow” into patient notes
☕ Survive on caffeine, compassion, and sheer superpower

Their expertise keeps everything running smoothly — from surgery to snuggles — and we honestly couldn’t do it without them.

So this week, give our amazing nurses a big shoutout or a thank-you when you see them.
You might not always see all they do, but trust us — they make everything better. 💚

Happy Vet Nurse Awareness Week, legends! 🐶🐱💉

🦷 Who doesn’t like a good before and after photo?!?

These are two examples of dogs who recently had dental procedures … What a glow-up! ✨

The scary thing is, many pets with teeth like the “before” photo don’t actually show pain – they just keep eating and carrying on. But under the surface, tartar, infection, and sore gums can cause serious health problems.

👉 That’s why it’s so important to regularly look in your pet’s mouth (if they’ll let you!) and get their teeth checked. The earlier we catch problems, the easier they are to fix – and the happier (and healthier) your pet will be.

So go on – lift that lip and take a peek! You might be surprised what’s hiding in there. 👻

Meet Mochi – the curly-haired charmer who came in for a routine neuter… except Mochi had a little secret. 🤫 Instead of two testicles in the right spot, one had decided to play hide-and-seek! 👀

👉 Why does this matter?
Retained testicles (cryptorchidism) aren’t just a quirky party trick – they’re a medical risk. A testicle stuck in the abdomen or groin has a much higher chance of developing nasty problems like testicular cancer or painful twisting (torsion). Check out the size difference in the photo below - the smaller one is the offender! Being kept too toasty, the retained testicle’s growth is hindered as well as its reproductive capacity.

👉 Is it genetic?
Yes! Cryptorchidism is hereditary, which means dogs with retained testicles shouldn’t be bred – otherwise the “hide-and-seek” gene keeps getting passed along.

The good news? Mochi is now safe, comfortable, and officially retired from future fatherhood. 🐾💙

Yesterday we had a special event in our own backyard. ❤️ Dr Crystal Loh and her two amazing nurses Natalie and Renee came to Taupo to pass on their expertise to our staff.

Crystal is a fully board certified veterinary dentist, and is super passionate about sharing her knowledge and teaching vets and nurses.

As a team we are committed to growing and improving, and we have a beautiful new dental radiography unit that we intend to put to good use! We had a great day learning in lectures and practical skill workshops, refreshing our dental radiography techniques as well as interpretation and treatment.

What a great day! And stay tuned for some special deals in the months ahead 😇
