Thank you to all of the amazing people in our community who helped one of our clients this morning, when her dog jumped out of her car window and took herself for a walk around beachlands! She is beyond grateful! Kura was found having a swim at the beach and is now back with mum, exhausted after her hour and a half adventure 🐾 ❤️

August is pet dental awareness month and to celebrate we have 20% off dental cleanings and dental x-rays during the month of August!

Dental disease is one of the most common health issues we see in veterinary medicine, with 70% of cats and 80% of dogs being affected by periodontal disease by the time they are 2 years old. Brushing your pets’ teeth daily with pet-safe toothpaste is one of the best ways to help prevent periodontal disease from developing - just like how we brush our own teeth every day! We stock a range of dental products including toothpaste/brushes, dental food, water additives and dental chews to help aid your pet’s dental hygiene.

Pets don't often display obvious symptoms of dental pain but some signs to look for that indicate your pet may already be suffering from periodontal disease include bad breath, red/inflamed gums that bleed easily, plaque and calculus build up on the teeth, and wobbly or missing teeth. Left untreated, periodontal disease can cause significant pain and lead to other health complications (such as kidney disease) affecting their quality of life.

Treatment includes a teeth cleaning (scale and polish) under anaesthetic by our veterinarian to remove plaque and calculus off the teeth to prevent harmful bacteria from being trapped under the gums. In some cases, our veterinarian will recommend dental x-rays to see if any teeth need extracting. If you think your pet needs a dental check-up, give us a call to chat with one of our friendly staff members about your options

*20% off dental cleaning and x-rays ONLY, discount does not apply to dental extractions

Warning - slightly graphic images!

Poor Colbie gave us a startling reminder the other day of the danger that fishhooks pose to our four-legged friends! Luckily her quick-thinking owners brought her straight down to us and we were able to sedate her and remove it in a jiffy.

It’s important to know that if a fishhook gets stuck on a lip like this you CANNOT simply pull it backwards out of the lip as the barbs on the hook are designed to lodge into the skin. If you find yourself in this unfortunate position you need to promptly seek veterinary attention so your pet can be sedated, given adequate pain relief and the hook removed safely.

Please be mindful of fishhooks (and fish carcasses that may contain fishhooks) when walking your dogs in areas where fishing is common, such as beaches or marinas. If you see people actively fishing while out on a walk, keep your dogs close to you a safe distance away 🎣

This is sweet little Pikachu, who unfortunately has a wound we don’t want her to be to be able to lick so it can heal properly. Lucky for Pikachu we had a Cool Collar in store that not only fits her perfectly but makes her look super cute and stylish as well!

CoolCollars Lyttelton are a fantastic (and fun!) alternative for cats and small dogs to the standard plastic cone as they don’t interfere with their ability to eat or get around the place anywhere near as much. Cool collars can be washed to be reused multiple times, and we stock their full range of sizes which come in so many fun patterns to make your pet look super stylish, like gorgeous little Pikachu💜

We had the gorgeous Goose in today for her spey surgery and she was needing a little bit of reassurance as she was waking up! This is Luna - mid surgery to widen her stenotic (narrow) nares (nostrils)
Her left nostril has been operated on, the right is yet to be done.

Luna is gorgeous 2 year old French Bull Dog. Frenchies belong to a group of dogs known as Brachycephalic Breeds, along with English Bulldogs, Pugs, Boston Terriers, Griffons and Shi Tzus
These breeds have a shortened snout and flat face. Consequently they sometimes suffer from narrow nostrils and long soft palates which can compromise their breathing

Lucky for them, we can perform surgery here at Pohutukawa Coast Vets to help alleviate some of their breathing difficulties, just like we did for Luna!
Luna has recovered really well from her surgery. She breathes easy and her snoring has improved significantly and the whole household are now sleeping soundly 💤 💤 💤

If you think your dog could benefit from this surgery have a chat to one of our vets 🐾
