I hope all new pet owners take a moment to think this through before adopting a new pet. They all grow up, get bigger, take time to train and time to look after throughout their life. They cost money to feed, house and treat medically. We give them time, a safe home for life, care that's needed and love, and they give it back in bundles more every time they greet you at the door with their wagging tails and pure joy that you've come home to them. 🥰

"My family brought me home, all cradled in their arms. They cuddled me and smiled at me and said I was full of charm. They played with me and laughed with me and showered me with toys. I sure did love my family, especially the little girls and boys.”
“The children loved to feed me; they gave me special treats. They even let me sleep with them – all snuggled in the sheets. I used to go for walks, often several times a day. They even fought to hold the leash, I’m very proud to say.”
“These are the things I’ll not forget – a cherished memory. Now that I’m in the shelter – without my family. They used to laugh and praise me when I played with that old shoe. But I didn’t know the difference between the old one and the new.”
“The kids and I would grab a rag, for hours we would tug. So I thought I did the right thing when I chewed the bedroom rug. They said that I was out of control, and would have to live outside. This I didn’t understand, although I tried and tried.”
“The walks stopped, one by one, they said they hadn’t time. I wish that I could change things; I wish I knew my crime. My life became so lonely in the backyard, on a chain. I barked and barked all day long to keep from going insane.”
“So they brought me to the shelter but were embarrassed to say why. They said I caused an allergy, and then they each kissed me goodbye. If I’d only had some training when I was a little pup, I wouldn’t have been so hard to handle when I was all grown up.”
“‘You only have one day left, I heard the worker say. Does that mean I have a second chance? Do I go home today?”

The outcome of the court case of the dog attack in Tauranga, where the vet standing 2m from the dog, in a veterinary clinic carpark was viciously attacked, is resonating through the profession. With current OSH laws and the responsibility being placed on the vet while the dog was still being held by the owner in the carpark means more precautions and likely more muzzle use unfortunately. Veterinary clinics are private businesses and can turn away patients if they are unable to safely provide assessment and treatment. Businesses have an OSH responsibility to all their staff and customers. This will likely have an effect in the way anxious, fearful and aggressive dogs are handled sadly.

The New Zealand Veterinary Association (NZVA) is expressing its disappointment today regarding Tauranga Moana District Court’s decision on a serious dog attack on a Bay of Plenty veterinarian.

Sadly this is spot on for a lot of vets in NZ ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oV8qHNxoVt8

A little bit of kindness goes a long way in the veterinary clinic. We know not everything works out as we'd like, and it can be an emotional place, but even just not yelling and threatening staff is a great place to start.

It is with heavy heart that we post this to inform everyone that one of our loved veterinarians, Dr. Senka Piri passed away on January 14th, 2021. Some of you would have met Senka in the waiting room with Trust and Hope. Others would have had the pleasure of having her treat their pets when I was unavailable here at Red Dog or at the After hr’s vets in Auckland where she showed amazing knowledge, compassion and patient care.

Senka was 31 years of age, born in Novi Sad Serbia (previously Yugoslavia) and moved to NZ when she was 4.5 years old with her family. She is survived by Kosta, her father and his partner Dianne, Lilly, her mother and Filip, her brother.

Senka graduated from Massey School of Veterinary Medicine in 2012 and was a shining light in the veterinary community with her excellent patient care and compassion over the last 8 years. She worked as an emergency veterinarian with Veterinary Specialist of Auckland, as an SPCA veterinarian and most recently with the Animal Emergency Centre in Auckland. She received several qualifications in canine rehabilitation during this time also.

Everyone knew they could find Senka off somewhere wheeling her old man ‘Trust’ around or trying to keep up with ‘Journey’, her youngest (and usually failing). Senka was a bright soul that burned out too quickly and will be sorely missed by both her family and the veterinary community that were her work Whanau.

There will be a memorial service held at:

The Natural Funeral Home at 120 New North Rd, Eden Terrace, Auckland NZ 1021

Wednesday January 20th, 2021 from 11am to 1pm with tea and light nibbles provided.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations or purchases be made in Senka’s name to either:

I am so lucky to have wonderful clients but there is unfortunately still a misconception amongst the general public around vet fees. This article, although written in the UK, outlines costs etc very well and it’s the same situation in NZ.

‘You vets do know how to charge, don’t you? Our last cat cost us a bloody fortune on treatment when it got cancer’, the barber told me, the clipper blade vibrating on my temple as he neatened my si…

Please be aware when entering Red Dog Rehab car park area ...

Meet the new kid on the block..... 🐴

So Levi has now moved in and his owner has asked us to please make our visitors aware of a few things:

- there is an electric ⚡ hot wire around the fence so avoid patting him
- please don't offer him anything to eat as he is on a strict diet
- and as usual, all dogs must be on a lead when leaving and entering your vehicle.
- please don't let your dogs bark or lunge at Levi

We will be working towards opening up more garden area for you to enjoy but in the meantime, we need to respect our handsome new flatmate and not cause him any undue stress.

Thank you 😃

Updates for when we are back in Level 2 and allowed to have clients back on the premises. I hope you're all keeping well and staying positive out there x

Please be understanding if veterinary clinic staff ask you to wear a face mask when entering their building - and please do wear a mask. This helps keep everyone safe. It also ensures the veterinary business is operating within the latest Government advice for Alert Levels 2 and 3. See http://ow.ly/HsZS50B38vd.

The Government is encouraging people to wear a face masks in places where you cannot maintain two meters physical distance from people you don't know - like in shops and veterinary clinics! See http://ow.ly/jcDv50B38vf

We support our members who are encouraging their clients to use masks as a precautionary measure while visiting their veterinary business.

With the new quarantine procedures in place for any positive community covid cases being moved into managed isolation, it's important we all have a plan for our pets. Please see the checklist below.
Remember if you help out a friend and look after their pets, it's important to consider their pets a possible contaminated 'contact surface' and ensure they have a soapy bath before they enter you car or home. Take precautions when you do this such as mask, gloves +/- face shield and change of clothes. Stay safe everyone.
