๐Ÿพ Staff Pet Sunday: Meet Chicken! ๐Ÿพ

This is Smudge, better known as Chicken, the 6-year-old queen of the house belonging to Molly, Intermediate Vet Nurse at VSA Christchurch.

A professional fire supervisor, Chicken loves stretching out in front of the fire and giving everyone a look when more wood is needed. ๐Ÿ”ฅ Her other favourite things are food, belly rubs, and being the centre of attention. ๐Ÿ‘‘

One of Chicken's more โ€œendearingโ€ habits is bringing a mouse into the house before casually heading to her food bowl, as if she's kindly provided dinner for the rest of the family. ๐Ÿญ๐Ÿ˜‚

๐Ÿพ Reuben's Latest Adventure at VSA ๐Ÿพ

After a week of reduced appetite, lethargy and diarrhoea, friendly boy Reuben, the 7-year-old Labradoodle, came to see our Internal Medicine team for further investigation. Repeat abdominal ultrasound confirmed there was no foreign body or intestinal obstruction, with findings pointing instead to a flare-up of his chronic inflammatory bowel disease.

The overnight team made sure Reuben felt right at home with an extra blanket to keep him cosy until he could return to his own bed. ๐Ÿ’œ

With a new treatment plan in place to help control intestinal inflammation, Reuben was bright, comfortable and ready for breakfast before heading home.

We're wishing this handsome boy a smooth recovery and many more tail wags in his future! ๐Ÿถ

๐ŸŽ“ That's a Wrap for Te Tihi 2026!โ
โ
Over the past few weeks, we've had the privilege of bringing together veterinary professionals for two successful Te Tihi education events, first in Auckland and most recently in Christchurch.โ
โ
Missed an event or want to revisit a presentation? Recordings from both events will soon be available on demand through the VSA Learning Hub. Veterinarians and veterinary nurses can sign up at learninghub.vsahospital.co.nz to access the recordings, along with a growing library of educational content. ๐Ÿ“šโ
โ
A huge thank you to our presenters, attendees, sponsors, and organising teams for helping make these events possible. โ

We look forward to continuing the learning journey together and seeing you at the 2027 Te Tihi Conferences.โ

In the spirit of International Dog Day, we'd like to celebrate the amazing dogs we're privileged to care for and the people who love them.

๐Ÿš—๐Ÿพ One of the highlights of Dr Richard Jerram's recent visit to Cromwell wasn't a consultation. It was a reunion.

While visiting Central Otago as part of our Regional Consulting Service, Stella's owners made a special trip to see Richard and show him just how well she is doing today.

Richard first met Stella in Auckland several years ago when she was experiencing significant shoulder pain and lameness. Following specialist assessment, surgery, physiotherapy and rehabilitation, Stella returned to the active life she loves and continues to thrive today. Since then, her owners have moved to Cromwell, making this recent reunion with Richard especially meaningful. โค๏ธ

As specialists, we're often involved during some of the most challenging periods of a pet's journey. Seeing patients like Stella thriving months, or even years, later is one of the most rewarding parts of what we do.

Dr Richard Jerram travels regularly to Hamilton, Tauranga, Hawke's Bay, Central Otago and Dunedin, providing specialist consultations, case reviews and collaborative clinical discussions with local veterinarians.

This regional service strengthens connections between specialist and primary care teams, ensuring pets and their families can access expert advice closer to home.

And every now and then, we get the added bonus of a visit from a happy patient like Stella ๐Ÿถโค๏ธ

This adorable face belongs to Mabel, a 7-month-old chocolate Labrador owned by Senior Cardiology Nurse Anouska. ๐ŸคŽโ
โ
Despite being diagnosed with heart disease at just 6 weeks old, Mabel doesn't let anything slow her down. Most days are spent causing the kind of chaos only a Labrador puppy can, whether that's swimming (water bowl included ๐Ÿ’ฆ), chasing leaves, digging up the veggie garden ๐ŸŒฑ, or staying one step behind her older brother, Loki.โ
โ
Full of energy, curiosity, and determination, Mabel is living life to the fullest and stealing hearts wherever she goes. ๐Ÿถ๐ŸคŽโ

๐ŸŒฟ Meet Fern ๐ŸŒฟโ
โ
When Fern, a young Ragdoll kitten, came to VSA Auckland West, she had been struggling with ongoing gastrointestinal troubles and wasn't growing as expected. During her assessment, our team discovered an intussusception, a serious condition where one section of intestine telescopes into another, requiring urgent intervention.โ
โ
Following surgery and dedicated care from our Medicine, Surgery and Nursing teams, Fern made an excellent recovery. Further testing helped identify and treat the underlying cause of her digestive issues, giving her the best chance to get back to being a healthy kitten. โ
โ
๐Ÿ“ธ๐Ÿ’š Plenty of cuddles were prescribed during Fern's recovery. Here she is with Nurse Anna, and her irresistible "cuddle me" face.โ
โ
We're pleased to report that Fern is now back home, where her family say she is happy and thriving. ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŒฟโ

๐Ÿš—๐Ÿพ Taking specialist veterinary expertise on the road.

Every month, Dr Richard Jerram and his wife, Carron, travel through some of New Zealand's most beautiful regions, bringing specialist veterinary expertise closer to local communities. From Waikato and Hawke's Bay to Central Otago and Dunedin, these visits support veterinarians, their clients, and the pets they care for.

Our Regional Consulting Service provides:
โœ”๏ธ In-person specialist consultations
โœ”๏ธ Case reviews
โœ”๏ธ Collaborative clinical discussions
โœ”๏ธ Educational opportunities for veterinary teams

By working alongside local veterinary practices, we're strengthening connections between primary and specialist care, making it easier for pets and their families to access specialist advice closer to home.

While the scenery is often spectacular, the real highlight is connecting with veterinary teams, pet owners and the animals who benefit from collaborative care across Aotearoa.

Stay tuned as we share some of the special moments from recent regional visits, including a memorable reunion in Cromwell. โค๏ธ

๐Ÿ’š Staff Pet Sunday: Meet Simon! ๐Ÿ’š

Simple Simon is the beloved feline of Molly, one of our amazing vet nurses at VSA Christchurch. At 3 years old, he's a cat who appreciates the simple things in lifeโ€”sunny spots to nap in, a comfortable lap to curl up on, and plenty of affection from his favourite people. ๐Ÿ‘‘๐Ÿฑ

Simon knows how to sit and can almost spin on command (as long as a treat is involved!). Molly describes him as the โ€œannoyingโ€ little brother their older cat never asked for.

Originally from a street over, Simon started spending more and more time at Molly's house, partly because he wasn't too keen on the two big dogs at his previous home. ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿ˜ฌ After Molly chatted with his owner, they agreed that Simon had chosen his new family, and he officially became part of the household!๐Ÿพโœจ

โœจ Chewy's comeback story โœจ

At 8 years old, adorable Shih Tzu Chewy was recently feeling a bit under the weather. What started as lethargy and a loss of his usual healthy appetite was ultimately found to be caused by a massive liver tumour occupying much of his abdomen. After advanced imaging and a complex surgery performed by Dr Damian Chase and the surgery team at VSA Auckland West to remove the tumour, the news everyone had been hoping for arrived: it was completely removed, with no evidence of spread! ๐Ÿ™

Now Chewy is back to enjoying life, and his famous "dress-ups" ๐Ÿงธ

๐Ÿ“ธ Swipe to see Chewy catching up with Dr Damian Chase at his revisit appointment, a CT image showing the enormous liver tumour before it was removed, and of course, Ewok Chewy! โœจ

๐Ÿ’ฌ Chewy's Dad says: "Thanks for everything, he's a happy EWOK again." โค๏ธ
