Autumn juveniles are notoriously difficult to keep alive. They start off life on the back foot, and never fully recover. With the disastrous summer hedgehogs have had, we are expecting the worst autumn season yet. So, it was no surprise to hear from home that 'Shepton' hog, a mere toddler, had passed away. Much love to our hog sitter who did everything in her power to save this baby, born without a fair chance.

🐾 Helping Hedgehogs πŸ¦”

Did you know that hedgehogs can travel over a mile each night in search of food? Sadly, these much-loved garden visitors are in decline, but there are simple ways we can all help.

Join us at Secret World Wildlife Rescue, East Huntspill, for our Helping Hedgehogs sessions, suitable for ages 5-15 years. We will share fascinating facts about hedgehogs, tips on how to make your garden hedgehog-friendly, and give you the chance to build a hedgehog house. 🏑

WE NEED YOUR HELP πŸ¦”πŸ¦”πŸ¦”

Thanks to the wonderful Frome Carnival we're one of their 3 supported good causes this year 🀎. We urgently need collectors to help raise money along the route of the carnival. If you can help us we'll be forever grateful. No experience experience needed, just you and your smiley face 😍. The wonderful folk at the Rotary Club will provide you with a bucket to shake and answer any questions you have.

If you can help out for the evening procession please go to Manor Road in the Trading Estate (near the junction with The Butts) for 6pm and register with the Rotary Club.

If you can help at the children's procession, please go to Victoria Park at 1.30 and register with the rotary club.

There are prizes for the best collector in fancy dress, so get your hedgehog* outfits on!

We are usually very hands off with the hedgehogs in our care, but lone hoglets, we feel, deserve to feel the warmth and breath of another living being. πŸ’šπŸ¦”

Dear little MLE ⭐ has stopped using her back legs, so a short hydrotherapy session will help us see anything out of sorts with her legs. Did you know that hedgehogs can swim? πŸ‘™ But not for long periods of time so please ensure your pond has an escape route.

Keyford’s community fete raises funds for hedgehog rescue

The Keyford community came together recently to raise Β£324 for Keyford Hedgehog Rescue and Rehab at the area’s annual fete.

Organised by the Keyford Area Neighbourhood Group (KANG), the fete was held in the closed-off bunting adorned street, and partygoers were encouraged to bring food and drink to share as well as a chair.

Festivities included a very popular bottle-stall tombola in aid of Keyford Hedgehog Rescue and Rehab, live music, a juggler, a β€˜guess the weight of the cake’ contest (3.1 kg!), expertly baked by Lotta, face painting, children’s games, storytelling, and a large grassy Village Green for toddlers, kindly loaned by Rik Haines of Positive Experience.

The good news is that we currently have several hedgehogs in our care that are growing and heading towards a weight that they can be released! The not so good news is that as the hogs grow, so does their appetite - they're the equivalent of teenagers with bottomless stomachs to match! πŸ—πŸ¦”

Despite some recent donations, we're running very low on food - especially wet food. If any of you out there have a few pounds to spare that you could use to buy some food we - and more importantly, the hogs - would be extremely grateful. πŸ™

There’s some food on our Amazon list, though if you prefer to buy local and bring it to us that’s great too. What we’ve found works best with hogs is grain free meat or poultry (not fish) and either kitten or cat food in jelly. 🀎🀎🀎

Our Amazon list is at https://bit.ly/khr-list. If you prefer to donate money to us so we can buy the food, details are at https://www.keyfordhedgehogrescue.uk/support-us

Thank you! πŸ¦”β€πŸ™

With the start of men’s premiership football ⚽ just around the corner and our very own FTFC Robins starting their campaign, it’s time to talk nets πŸ₯…. Hedgehogs and nets really do not go together – hedgehogs are inquisitive things, but they have very poor eyesight. If a net is at ground level it’s easy for them to walk into a net. Once they do this they’ll often wriggle around to escape, but this tends to just get them tangled in the net leaving them stuck. The longer they are caught in netting the more likely they are to become dehydrated and exhausted. Even if a hedgehog is rescued from netting and seems OK it may have constriction injuries that will need monitoring for at least a week after it is cut out of netting – so please take the hog to a rescue or to a vet. πŸš‘

However, the best thing is to make sure that a hedgehog can’t get tangled up in netting by lifting any nets up by 30cm overnight. If you are involved with a sports club or leisure centre that uses netting, please ask them to lift their nets. And please lift your own nets overnight if you have any in your garden. πŸ™πŸ¦”β€

PS: And please keep putting saucers of water out for our prickly pals - they're really struggling in this hot dry weather.
