With some help from Hedgehog Hogspital Rescue & Rehabilitation yesterday, we helped the wonderful staff and service users of The Willows - Autonomy Life take the British Hedgehog Preservation Society pledge to do more to help hedgehogs in their garden. Thank you to the whole team for making us feel so welcome ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿฆ”๐Ÿ’š

Yes, it's Hedgehog Awareness Week โ€” but the truth is, every single day we should be hedgehog aware.

Iโ€™ve been quiet the past few days, which alot of you know isnโ€™t like me, but this year has probably been the most toughest already than the past 6 years of hedgehog rescue.

So many injured hedgehogs coming in which could have been easily preventable if only we took the time to consider our precious wildlife when carrying out garden activities.

One of my very recent releases was admitted again after being caught in a garden fire โ€” it had been asleep in a nest of cut grass that was set alight.

Most animals rely on a โ€œfight or flightโ€ response when faced with danger โ€” they either run or defend themselves HEDGEHOGS DON'T... Their instinct is to curl up tightly into a ball and stay still. Thatโ€™s exactly what this little one did, it stayed curled up as the pile smoldered away, breathing in all those toxic fumes.

By the time it reached me, it was too late and suffering from COโ‚‚ poisoning, and not long after admission, it took its final breath.

Itโ€™s unbearable to witness, and the hardest part is knowing it didnโ€™t have to happen if the appropriate checks had been made first.

Most people Iโ€™ve come across over the past few days have seen me in tears โ€” and Iโ€™m not sorry for that. I have a heart, and these hedgehogs hold a big piece of it.

Please, Iโ€™m kindly asking you โ€” always check garden waste and bonfires before lighting it. One quick check could be the difference between life and death.

I'm sure all hedgehog rehabilitators will agree, we are not immune to the hurt. we feel every single loss, every bit of suffering, and it stays with us long after.

Thank you to everyone who has supported me through these past few days. Your kindness has kept me going. Iโ€™ll keep fighting for them, even on the days it hurts the most. ๐Ÿฆ”๐Ÿ’”

We have some lovely news to share! ๐Ÿฆ”

Alistair Scott of Trug & Lettuce has joined Keyford Hedgehog Rescue CIC as a Director. Alistair will help with admin and decision-making behind the scenes โ€” and if you happen to catch him out and about, he'll be happy to point you in the right direction or hand over a leaflet. We're genuinely grateful for his support in helping keep the rescue viable. It means more than we can say.

And on that note โ€” the building works that were planned for last winter are now looking likely to start within the next couple of months. Once complete, the rescue can reopen properly and be ready for the incoming licensing of animal rescues in England. Watch this space! ๐ŸŒฟ

This year has brought some significant changes for the rescue, and I want to be open with you all about where things stand.
Alongside losing Graham, the charity I worked for full-time has closed following a funding crisis. That means the rescue has lost both salaries that kept it running โ€” not just covering food and veterinary costs, but the everyday household bills that running a rescue quietly adds up on: fuel, water, and everything in between.
I know many of you have kindly offered to volunteer, and that means a great deal. But the reality is that bringing volunteers into a home-based rescue comes with its own layer of responsibility โ€” insurance, risk assessments, training, waivers โ€” and right now, that's more capacity than I have.
Until my own situation is on steadier ground, I'll be channelling my energy into what I can genuinely sustain: offering advice, education, and continuing to push for a Frome that's safer and friendlier for hedgehogs.
Your support, whether that's a kind word, a share, or a donation, makes more difference than you might realise. Thank you for being part of this.

I need some help!! We were incredibly lucky to be given an android phone to use for the rescue. Unfortunately, Graham didn't make a note of the PIN (just about the only thing he didn't leave a note of ๐Ÿ’”) so I can't unlock it. I've tried Google and YouTube. Can anyone help? J x ๐Ÿ’š ๐Ÿฆ”

Today's course with was one to remember. ๐Ÿฆ”๐Ÿ’š
This course was booked by Graham โ€” part of his vision to make a town. The Vale team made sure it happened, and rangers Toni and Laura joined colleague Ranger Asia in completing a full day of intensive training. Three rangers. One town. Frome's hedgehogs are in good hands.
Huge thanks to everyone who came, to Jeff for his brilliant facilitation, and to FTC and for their support. ๐ŸŒฟ
