Before and after of a dental scale and polish 🦷

Dental care in animals is often overlooked. As tartar builds up, bacteria grows and the tooth decays!

Daily tooth brushing from a young age is the best way to prevent this at home, however, this is not possible for all pets, and once there, tartar cannot be brushed away.

Alfie came in for a scale and polish due to some tartar build up. Alfie’s teeth were nice and healthy under the tartar, however if left, the tartar would increase causing gum recession, tooth decay and severe pain.

Pets are good at disguising pain, many pets with severe dental disease will continue to eat, it is therefore important to monitor dental health!

There has been an increase in non veterinary professionals offering anaesthesia free dental scaling. Whilst this is appealing, it comes with risk!:
- If not used properly, ultrasonic scalers can cause severe damage to the tooth.
- A comprehensive scale is not possible on a conscious animal as all sides of the tooth cannot be reached- the back teeth are often the most diseased and are difficult to access.
- non veterinary professionals are unable to determine if a tooth is healthy or requires further treatment such as removal.

To the animals lost in service, and to those who serve us today 💜

Animals like horses, dogs and pigeons were often drafted into the war effort, and purple poppies can be worn to remember the service of these animals and the lives that were lost.

On our Pet Health Plan, our 6 monthly checks are now carried out by our wonderful nurses! 🩺
The nurse will carry out a full body assessment and ask you questions about your pet. Whilst nurses are not legally able to diagnose conditions and prescribe medications, they are trained to spot abnormalities and refer cases to the Veterinary Surgeon if needed.
Included in the Pet Health Plan is also a free Vet consultation, therefore, if any concerns are found during the nurse check, your pet can be referred to a vet!

Fireworks can be stressful for pets, and it’s important to know the signs that your furry friend is scared. Trembling, hiding, trying to escape, excessive vocalisation, panting, or drooling are all common indicators of anxiety.

Here are some top tips to help keep your pets calm and safe during the fireworks:

🐾Create a Safe Space: Set up a cosy, quiet room with their favourite toys and blankets.
🎶 Noise Distraction: Play calming music or turn on the TV to help drown out the loud bangs outside.
🐕 Walk Earlier: Take your dog for a walk before dark, before the fireworks start.
🏠 Keep Them Indoors: Make sure windows, doors, and pet flaps are closed so your pet can't escape if they get spooked.
🐰 Don’t Forget the Small Pets: Move rabbits, guinea pigs, and other small pets indoors or cover their enclosures to muffle the noise.

If your pet gets distressed, speak to us about how we can help.

Let's make sure our pets enjoy a peaceful, stress-free night!

Think of our wildlife this bonfire night ! 🔥

To animals such as hedgehogs and mice, an unlit bonfire looks like a perfect home. Every year, these animals suffer a horrific death 🥺

Think of the animals before lighting a bonfire 🐭🦔

Pigeons are sentient beings and deserve the same respect as other wildlife! 🐦🩶

Almost everyone has been witness to the abuse of these creatures; whether it be kids chasing them in the street, drivers taking no care to avoid hitting them, or people paying no notice to an injured pigeon 😢

Pigeons were domesticated by humans and played a valued part in both world wars ✉️ Since then, pigeons are widely viewed as ‘pests’ and are subject to abuse and neglect!

Respect for animals starts from childhood, we should be teaching our young people how to treat all creatures with kindness. Chasing or kicking pigeons or other animals should not be tolerated.

This little baby was found injured on the side of the road by nurse Sam. If you find a sick or injured pigeon, please contact local wildlife sanctuaries or your veterinary practice 📞

This week the CMA shared proposals for the UK veterinary sector.

At Uplands Way Vets, we would like to reassure you our priorities are unchanged: compassionate care for your pet.

We’re proud to be part of VetPartners, a veterinary group that supports us with training, equipment and back-office help. It was founded and is led by vets, that have the same focus on compassionate care for pets. Clinical decisions are, and always have been, made here by our team, always with your pet’s best interests at heart. 💛

We also want to reassure you that many of the proposals reflect things we already do to care for you and your pets:
✨ Prices: You can find typical fees on our website to help you plan.
✨ Written prescriptions, so you can choose where to buy ongoing medication.
✨ Estimates: We aim to give clear estimates before treatment (especially for higher-cost care) and keep you updated every step of the way.

If you ever have questions or concerns about your pet’s care or costs, our friendly team is just a message or phone call away — we’re always happy to help. 🐾

We’re also continuously looking for ways to improve, so your feedback is very welcome.
