Here are three common pet-related myths:
1. “A dry nose means your dog is sick.”
False. A dog’s nose can be dry for many harmless reasons—sleeping, warm weather, or dehydration. It’s not a reliable indicator of illness on its own.
2. “Cats always land on their feet.”
Not always. While cats have a righting reflex, they can still be seriously injured in falls, especially from short heights where they don’t have time to reposition.
3. “You only need to see the vet when your pet is sick.”
False. Regular check-ups help catch problems early, keep vaccinations up to date, and ensure long-term health through preventative care.

Is Your Senior Dog Acting “Off”? It Could Be More Than Just Old Age.

Just like humans, dogs can experience age-related cognitive decline.
If your older companion is showing signs like:
• Disorientation (getting “lost” in familiar places)
• Changes in sleep patterns
• Increased anxiety or restlessness
• House soiling despite being previously trained
• Staring at walls or getting “stuck”

…they could be suffering from Canine Cognitive Dysfunction (CCD)—often called doggy dementia.

The good news? There are treatments and lifestyle adjustments that can improve quality of life and slow progression.

If you’ve noticed changes in your senior dog’s behavior, let’s talk. We’re here to help your best friend age gracefully and comfortably.

Easter Pet Safety Reminder from Cherry Tree Vets

Easter is a joyful time filled with chocolate eggs, hot cross buns, and other delicious treats — but please remember, what’s a treat for us can be dangerous for our furry friends!

Keep an eye out for these Easter hazards:
• Chocolate – toxic to dogs and cats, even in small amounts.
• Hot cross buns – raisins and sultanas can cause kidney failure in dogs.
• Spring bulbs and flowers – lilies, daffodils and tulips can be harmful if eaten.
• Foil wrappers and plastic eggs – can cause choking or blockages.

If you think your pet may have eaten something they shouldn’t, call us immediately — acting quickly can make all the difference.

Wishing all our lovely clients (and their four-legged family members) a safe and happy Easter!

“Is Your Dog Sneezing a Lot? It Could Be More Than Just Allergies!”

At Cherry Tree Vets, we’ve recently seen a few dogs with foreign bodies stuck up their noses — most often blades of grass or foxtails that sneak in during walkies. These pesky intruders can cause:
• Persistent sneezing
• Nasal discharge (sometimes bloody)
• Pawing at the face or nose
• Sudden discomfort or even nosebleeds

If your dog starts sneezing suddenly and won’t stop, especially after a walk or a play in long grass, it’s worth getting them checked out. Left untreated, foreign bodies can cause infection or even travel deeper into the nasal passages.

Our team can gently and safely remove what’s causing the problem, often with the help of a light sedative and specialist tools.

Worried about your dog’s snuffles? Give us a call today – we’re here to help noses get back to sniffing happily!

Nala was relieved to have that nasty bramble twig out of her nose today !

🦌🦔🦆🦊🦉🦡 Helping Wildlife: Know What To Do
We love animals — wild ones too! But did you know that vets aren’t legally responsible for collecting or treating injured wildlife? 🦌🦔🦆🦊🦉🦡

If you find an injured wild animal:
Call the RSPCA: 0300 1234 999
For roadside animals: contact the Highways Agency: 0300 123 5000

You can still help:
• Contain small, calm animals safely if it’s safe to do so
• Bring them to us only if absolutely necessary — and only small species
• Large or dangerous animals should be left to trained rescue teams

Thank you for your kindness — and for helping us care responsibly.

🚨 Tetanus in Dogs: What Every Dog Owner Needs to Know! 🐶⚠️

Tetanus isn’t just a human disease—it can affect dogs too! Though rare, when it happens, it can be life-threatening if not treated quickly. Knowing the signs, risks, and prevention tips can save your dog’s life!

🔬 What is Tetanus?

Tetanus is caused by the bacteria Clostridium tetani, which enters the body through wounds, cuts, or punctures. Once inside, it releases a powerful toxin (tetanospasmin) that attacks the nervous system, causing severe muscle stiffness and spasms.

🐕 Early Signs of Tetanus in Dogs

Tetanus symptoms usually appear 3–18 days after infection. Watch for:
✅ Stiffness in the jaw or legs (first sign, often near the wound).
✅ Difficulty eating or swallowing (lockjaw).
✅ Ears held rigidly upright.
✅ Third eyelid protrusion.
✅ Excessive drooling.
✅ Hypersensitivity to noise and touch (dog reacts strongly to sounds or movement).
✅ Stiff-legged walking (“sawhorse stance”).

💥 If untreated, symptoms worsen to:
🚨 Full-body muscle rigidity → dog can’t move properly.
🚨 Painful muscle spasms triggered by noise, light, or touch.
🚨 Difficulty breathing due to muscle paralysis → can lead to death.

💉 Can Tetanus Be Treated?

YES! But early treatment is critical. If your dog shows any of these symptoms, seek emergency veterinary care immediately! Treatment includes:
🦠 Antibiotics (Metronidazole, Penicillin) to kill bacteria.
💉 Tetanus Antitoxin to neutralize the toxin (must be given early).
💊 Muscle relaxants & sedatives to ease stiffness and pain.
💧 IV fluids & supportive care if the dog can’t eat or drink.
🏥 Hospitalization in severe cases for round-the-clock care.

🛑 How to Prevent Tetanus in Dogs?

🔹 Clean all wounds immediately (especially deep cuts and punctures).
🔹 If your dog gets a deep or dirty wound, visit the vet ASAP.
🔹 High-risk dogs can get a tetanus vaccine (tetanus toxoid) for long-term protection.
🔹 Monitor wounds for infection (redness, swelling, pus).

🚨 Raise Awareness & Save Lives!

Many dog owners don’t realize their pets can get tetanus. Share this post to spread awareness and help protect more dogs! 🐾❤️
