MASSIVE congratulations to Neil and Hubble on passing their IMDT GRADE 5 - platinum grade!!!!!

What amazing perseverance - it's only taken 3 years! What a super clever little dog Hubble is (very hard to photograph black dogs effectively!) Now to pass grade 6 - diamond grade!

Grooming!
It's something that's often overlooked. We tell ourselves, "The dog will be fine," or "They'll just have to put up with it."
But is that really fair to our dogs?

How can we make grooming a more positive experience for both the dog and the groomer?
It starts with teaching our dogs that grooming and handling (husbandry) are safe and even enjoyable.

Think about it: Would we expect a puppy to tolerate a full grooming session right off the bat, blow-dry, clippers, loud noises, and all? Of course not!

A good, positive-reinforcement groomer will ease a puppy into the process. They’ll start with short, 30-minute sessions where your dog is gently introduced to the various parts of grooming. Over time, this builds trust and comfort.

So, how can we help prepare them at home?
Always approach and touch your dog from below, rather than above, to avoid seeming threatening.
Speak calmly and offer treats during handling to create a positive association.
Gently practice touching their feet, but take it slow and don’t force it.
Keep sessions short and positive, repeating a few times a day to help your dog get used to being handled.
Don’t wait until your pup is 6 months old to visit the groomer for the first time. Grooming is just as much a part of their early socialisation as puppy classes.

I HOPE this will my last day of classes with a cast on my leg! My dogs have been amazing putting up with me waddling around! We've pushed though together - now I'm excited to (hopefully) be back on 2 legs next week!

How I love trick (brain) training - the dogs love it too!

So on a happy Thursday - thinking about Saturday's classes - vote for your favourite trick!

Mine - it depends on the dog, I love what they love! With Danny - my newest trick of jumping through my arms, Flora and Prim - holding objects, Baby - play dead or roll over. Basically I love them all! Watch out for some trick videos on there way!

I have a rule - if I wouldn't do something (or put something on) a child I wouldn't do it to a dog. I wouldn't put a prong collar, shock collar, anti pull harness on a child, so I won't put it on a dog. I wouldn't put it on myself either! Good relationships are based on trust - you can't gain trust through fear or pain.

On or off the furniture?!

I've heard some 'interesting' ideas on this - if you have your dog on their the furniture they'll think they're the 'alpha', if you don't let your dog on the furniture they'll think you don't love them, "I can't stop them from jumping on when they feel like it", it will give them hot spots on their skin etc.

The truth is - it's personal preference! My dogs don't come on the sofa - my preference, other people's dogs do because they like a cuddle.

What do you do and why? Any advice on dogs on sofas - other than choosing one that is the same colour as your dog!

What's in a name?!

So how long did you spend choosing your puppy's/dog's name? What's the 'perfect' name? Does it need to end in an eee sound, how many syllables, does your puppy need to respond to it? I once met an owner who was on their 6th Barney! All their dogs had been labradors and all called Barney - well they were never going to forget were they?!

So, what's your puppy's/ dog's name and how or why did you choose it?

I'll start -
Izzie (Isabella) - a compromise because my daughter wanted to call her a name I didn't like and this was second choice!
Flora and Prim (Primrose) - flower names because they were born in the summer
Freddie - I just liked it, no other reason!
Danny - kennel name Spectre, he's Daniel Craig!
Anna - kennel name Narayana
Baby - the last baby to be born out of eight, her 'real' name is Amber!
Wasp - made a noise like a Wasp when she was just a few days old and fighting for food
Ivy - Christmas puppy
Henry - after my dad
