Grooming!
It's something that's often overlooked. We tell ourselves, "The dog will be fine," or "They'll just have to put up with it."
But is that really fair to our dogs?
How can we make grooming a more positive experience for both the dog and the groomer?
It starts with teaching our dogs that grooming and handling (husbandry) are safe and even enjoyable.
Think about it: Would we expect a puppy to tolerate a full grooming session right off the bat, blow-dry, clippers, loud noises, and all? Of course not!
A good, positive-reinforcement groomer will ease a puppy into the process. They’ll start with short, 30-minute sessions where your dog is gently introduced to the various parts of grooming. Over time, this builds trust and comfort.
So, how can we help prepare them at home?
Always approach and touch your dog from below, rather than above, to avoid seeming threatening.
Speak calmly and offer treats during handling to create a positive association.
Gently practice touching their feet, but take it slow and don’t force it.
Keep sessions short and positive, repeating a few times a day to help your dog get used to being handled.
Don’t wait until your pup is 6 months old to visit the groomer for the first time. Grooming is just as much a part of their early socialisation as puppy classes.
