The Art of Bone Sorting in Taxidermy šŸ¤

Cleaning and sorting bones is a crucial step in skeletal articulation and preservation. Once an animal has been properly cleaned, often using dermestid beetles or maceration… the real work begins!

Sorting bones requires patience and a keen eye for detail. Each tiny piece must be identified and matched to its correct place, from delicate toe bones to vertebrae that need to be arranged in perfect order. For larger specimens, reference materials like skeletal diagrams help ensure accuracy.

Why go through all this effort? Proper sorting preserves the integrity of the skeleton, whether it’s being rearticulated for display or used for study. Plus, there’s something incredibly satisfying about piecing nature back together!

Meet the Team: Jasper🪲
Role: Bug Expert & Workshop Educator

Jasper entered into the world of weird at a young age, always having a collection of bugs in his bedroom or cleaning bones in his university apartment. When he moved to Vancouver he quickly engaged with Pretty Dead to work with the things he is passionate about outside of academics. He is a bug lover, neuroscience student, and horror fiend with a passion for spreading awareness for all things odd.

You’ll often find Jasper drinking copious amounts of coffee with a horror book in hand, likely waiting to book yet another insect tattoo. Jasper teaches introductory and advanced workshops through Pretty Dead on insect art and preservation, and is open to taking custom commissions.

He has a great compassion and recognition of the animals he works with collaboratively to make art, and aims to show his love of insects through the lens of creation. Combining his multiple years of experience in academia, Jasper teaches accessible and inclusive workshops and lectures both in the world of taxidermy and human rights, often speaking on panels regarding 2S&LGBTQIA+ issues. With a wealth of experience in advocacy, harm reduction, and barrier elimination, Jasper approaches the world through a lens of understanding, equity, and empowerment.

Meet the Pyropina phantom, a stunning glasswing butterfly with near-invisible wings!

Instead of vibrant colors, these delicate butterflies rely on transparency for camouflage, blending seamlessly into their surroundings. Their wings have microscopic structures that scatter light in a way that prevents glare, making them almost impossible to spot in the wild.

Despite their fragile appearance, glasswings are surprisingly strong fliers, capable of covering long distances in search of food and mates. Their primary defense? Being nearly invisible to predators!

These stunning beauties are available in store šŸ¤

Meet the man-faced stink bug (Catacanthus incarnatus) šŸ–¤

A striking insect with a name as bizarre as its appearance. Found across South and Southeast Asia, this bug gets its nickname from the bold markings on its back, which some say resemble a human face!

Despite its eye-catching colors, this stink bug isn’t just for show… it uses chemical defenses to deter predators. When threatened, it releases a foul-smelling odor, just like other members of the stink bug family.

Meet the Team: Nat šŸ–¤
Role: Operations Manager, taxidermist wrangler and creative force to be reckoned with.

If you’ve ever wondered what keeps Pretty Dead Taxidermy running smoothly, the answer is simple: Nat. As our Operations Manager, she’s the mastermind behind the madness, keeping everything (and everyone) in line while bringing her own artistic flair to the business.

With a passion for art and all things strange and wonderful. When she’s not making sure the business runs like a well-oiled machine, she’s also a talented tattoo artist and graphic designer!

Pretty Dead Taxidermy wouldn’t be the same without Nat’s brilliance, dedication, and devilish sense of humor. She’s the glue that holds everything together, the creative mind behind the curtain, and honestly, we’d all be lost without her.

If you ever hear suspicious snickering followed by Jo shouting in frustration, chances are Nat has struck again with one of her signature pranks.
