Sharing our city with wildlife is part of life in Vancouver — but your pet’s safety always comes first 🐾
With coyote activity increasing during spring and early summer, we often see a rise in pet-related incidents. Coyotes may be more territorial while protecting their pups.
Here are a few ways to help keep your pet safe:
• Always keep dogs on leash, especially in parks and green spaces
• Avoid letting pets roam unattended, even in fenced yards
• Walk with awareness — limit outings during dawn and dusk
• Pick up food sources that may attract wildlife (including pet food and waste)
• If you encounter a coyote, stay calm, keep your pet close, and slowly create distance
Even cautious pets can be vulnerable in these situations. If your pet has had any interaction with a coyote — visible injury or not — we recommend a veterinary check to ensure there are no hidden wounds or risks of infection.
Your vigilance plays a big role in preventing emergencies.
