🦜 Bird Flu (H5 Avian Influenza) – What Pet Owners Need to Know

With recent reports of H5 bird flu being detected in wild birds in Australia, we know many pet owners have questions.

While Newbridge Animal Centre does not treat birds, we want to ensure our community has access to accurate, up-to-date information.

The good news is that the current risk to the general public and household pets remains low. However, there are a few sensible precautions everyone can take:

🐾 Keep dogs on a lead around beaches, wetlands and areas where wild birds gather.
🐾 Don’t allow pets to investigate or eat sick or dead birds.
🐾 Keep cats indoors where possible to reduce contact with wildlife.
🐾 Prevent wild birds from accessing your pet’s food and water bowls.
🐾 Wash your hands after any contact with birds or wildlife.

If your dog or cat becomes unwell after contact with a wild bird, please contact Newbridge Animal Centre promptly and let us know about the exposure. Although infections in pets are uncommon, early assessment is important.

⚠️ If you find a sick or dead wild bird:
• Do not touch it.
• Keep children and pets away.
• Report it to the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888.

Oops… she did it again! 🤦‍♀️🍫

When Sahara decided that ten Raffaello chocolates (wrappers included!) would make the perfect breakfast, her family didn’t waste any time getting her to Newbridge Animal Centre.

Thankfully, acting quickly meant we were able to induce vomiting and remove the chocolates before they could cause more serious problems. Despite the morning’s drama, Sahara remained her usual happy self, tail wagging the entire time! ❤️

This is a great reminder that if your pet has eaten something they shouldn’t, don’t wait for symptoms to appear. The sooner you seek veterinary advice, the more treatment options we often have available.

Many of our clients will recognise Sahara as one of our regular visitors, but she is also the face behind a wonderful Australian-owned pet care range, Earth Dog. We are proud to stock and use a number of Earth Dog products within our clinic and love supporting local businesses that are passionate about pet health and wellbeing.

We’re very pleased to report that Sahara is doing well and back home where she belongs.
