🦜 Male or Female – Which Makes the Better Companion Green Cheek Conure?

One of the most common questions we are asked is:
“Should I get a male or a female conure?”

The simple answer is:
👉 For a companion pet, gender is far less important than how the bird is raised, socialised and matched to the owner.

Both male and female Green Cheek Conures can make wonderful companions, but there are some differences worth understanding.

🌱 What Really Matters Most: Upbringing, Not Gender

Temperament in Green Cheek Conures is shaped mainly by:
• hand-raising and early handling
• socialisation with people
• diet and environment
• consistent interaction and training

A well-raised female will be just as friendly and affectionate as a well-raised male.
Poorly raised birds of either gender can develop behavioural issues.

For companion homes, personality always matters more than s*x.

🟢 Male Green Cheek Conures (general tendencies)

Males are often described as:
• playful and energetic
• curious and outgoing
• more vocal during breeding season
• sometimes more territorial or hormonal

Some owners feel males may be slightly more inclined to mimic sounds, but this varies greatly from bird to bird and is never guaranteed.

🟣 Female Green Cheek Conures (general tendencies)

Females are often:
• calmer and more even-tempered
• less prone to dominance behaviours
• very affectionate and loyal
• easier to manage hormonally in many home environments

For families or first-time owners, females can be an excellent choice because they tend to be a little more predictable in temperament.

🧠 Hormones & Behaviour

Hormonal behaviour is often misunderstood.
It is influenced more by:
• daylight hours
• diet
• nesting triggers
• environment

than by gender alone.

Both males and females can become hormonal if:
• nesting areas are provided
• stimulation is excessive
• routines are inconsistent

With proper care and management, either s*x can be a calm and loving companion.

🏠 Adding a Second Bird – Why Same S*x Is Often the Better Choice

If you are adding a new Green Cheek Conure to your household and do not want breeding behaviour, choosing a same-s*x companion is usually the preferred option.

Pairing a male and female together can encourage:
• hormonal bonding
• mating behaviour
• egg laying in females
• territorial or nest-seeking behaviour
• increased aggression or stress

These behaviours can make management more difficult in a typical family home environment.

By choosing two birds of the same s*x, you significantly reduce the likelihood of:
• breeding behaviour
• unwanted eggs
• hormonal cycles being triggered
• nesting and dominance issues

Same-s*x pairs can still:
✔️ bond strongly
✔️ play together
✔️ provide companionship
✔️ remain focused on their human family

without the complications that come with mixed-s*x pairs.

For homes wanting companionship rather than breeding, a same-s*x pairing is usually the calmer and more practical option.

🏡 Companion Home vs Breeding Home

For breeding, s*x obviously matters.

For a pet companion, what matters most is:
• friendliness
• confidence
• good social skills
• compatibility with the owner

This is why many ethical breeders recommend choosing a bird based on temperament rather than gender.

💬 Talking & Bonding

There is a common myth that:

“Males talk more and females are less friendly.”

In Green Cheek Conures, this is not reliably true.
Talking ability and bonding come from:
• interaction
• trust
• training
• environment

Many female conures become excellent talkers and deeply bonded companions.

🏆 Our Recommendation

When choosing a Green Cheek Conure as a companion pet, we recommend:

✔️ Choose the bird that is calm, curious and confident
✔️ Choose the bird that steps up easily
✔️ Choose the bird that shows interest in people
✔️ Don’t choose purely based on gender

A well-matched bird will bring far more joy than simply choosing “male” or “female”.

🦜 Final Thought

Male or female, a Green Cheek Conure is a long-term commitment and a deeply rewarding companion when raised correctly.

The best bird for you is the one that:
• fits your lifestyle
• shows a friendly temperament
• has been raised with care
• and is supported by a responsible breeder

At Cheeky Conure & Co, we help match each bird to the right home based on personality and suitability — not just gender.

🦜 Why Visiting Multiple Bird Locations in One Day Is a Biosecurity Risk

At Cheeky Conure & Co, the health and welfare of our birds is our highest priority.
For this reason, we follow strict biosecurity practices and ask that visitors do not attend other bird shops or aviaries on the same day as visiting us.

Many people don’t realise that moving between bird environments in a single day creates a serious disease transmission risk — even when birds appear healthy.

🦠 How Disease Is Carried Between Aviaries

Bird diseases are commonly spread through what is known as fomite transmission — meaning pathogens are carried on:
• clothing
• shoes
• hands
• hair
• bags
• phones
• car interiors

Feather dust, dried droppings, and microscopic particles can cling to these surfaces and be transported unknowingly from one location to another.

A visitor does not need to touch a bird for transmission to occur.

🏬 Why Pet Shops and Large Aviaries Increase Risk

High-density bird environments such as pet shops and large commercial aviaries often contain:
• birds from multiple sources
• mixed ages (chicks and adults)
• constant turnover of stock
• shared airspace
• high levels of feather dust
• frequent public handling

Even well-run facilities cannot eliminate risk because birds may carry disease without showing symptoms.

When visitors move from:
pet shop → large aviary → private breeder,
they unintentionally transport pathogens between three separate bird populations.

This is one of the most common pathways for disease spread in aviculture.

⚠️ Diseases Commonly Spread This Way

Some of the serious diseases that can be transmitted via clothing and shoes include:
• Psittacosis (Chlamydia psittaci) – zoonotic, airborne, often asymptomatic
• PBFD (Psittacine Beak & Feather Disease) – extremely resistant in the environment
• Polyomavirus – especially dangerous for young birds
• Avian Bornavirus (PDD)
• Aspergillus (fungal spores)
• Salmonella and E. coli
• mites and lice

Young, hand-raised birds are particularly vulnerable to these pathogens.

🏡 Why This Matters for Private Breeders

Private breeders and small aviaries maintain controlled, low-exposure environments.
Our birds are:
• hand raised
• carefully monitored
• housed in clean, low-traffic conditions
• not exposed to high-density bird populations

Introducing disease into such an environment can result in:
• serious illness or death of birds
• costly veterinary treatment
• long quarantine periods
• loss of breeding stock
• emotional distress
• damage to reputation and trust

A single visit can undo months or years of careful work.

🛡️ Responsible Biosecurity Practices

For these reasons, many ethical breeders operate with rules such as:
• visits by appointment only
• no same-day visits after other bird shops or aviaries
• clean clothes and footwear
• hand sanitising on arrival
• limited access to bird areas
• no handling of multiple birds

These practices are standard in professional aviculture, poultry breeding, and animal husbandry industries worldwide.

They are not about inconvenience — they are about protection.

🧠 Education Over Judgment

This is not about criticising pet shops or other aviaries.
It is about understanding that:

Different bird populations carry different disease risks, and moving between them in one day increases the chance of cross-contamination.

Most people simply aren’t aware of this risk.
Education allows buyers and breeders to work together to protect bird health.

🦜 Our Commitment

At Cheeky Conure & Co, our commitment is to raise healthy, confident companion birds in a safe environment.

We kindly ask visitors to:
• plan visits on a separate day from any other bird locations
• respect our biosecurity policies
• understand that these measures exist solely for the welfare of the birds

Thank you for helping us protect the birds in our care.

Here is a side by side comparison between a SFV TY and DFV TY

As always Im happy if the post is share please acknowledge where its from Cheeky Conure & Co

This is my interpretation

Side-by-Side: SF Violet Turquoise Yellowside vs DF Violet Turquoise Yellowside

🔹 LEFT IMAGE — SF Violet Turquoise Yellowside

What stands out:
• Green influence still present, particularly through the rump and lower back
• Turquoise reads lighter and greener, with less saturation
• Violet influence is there, but overlaid, not dominant
• Overall look can resemble a darker turquoise or strong SF rather than a true DF
• Colour transitions are softer, less “inked in”

This is exactly where many birds get over-represented as DF when they’re not.

🔹 RIGHT IMAGE — DF Violet Turquoise Yellowside

What confirms DF:
• No green showing through the rump or lower back
• Body colour is deep, saturated cobalt/royal blue
• Violet influence is unmistakable and uniform
• The bird looks “heavy” in colour — almost painted on
• Clear visual separation between yellow belly and blue body

This is what a true DF violet turquoise yellowside should look like.

Why This Matters (and why it’s tricky)

Turquoise + violet is one of the hardest combinations to visually assess, especially when:
• Lighting varies
• Birds are young or mid-moult
• Turquoise depth is naturally darker
• Yellowside softens contrast

In mutations (yellowside, pineapple, cinnamon), DF violet is often easier to identify than in plain turquoise birds — something I’ve personally found over time.

A note from experience (important for buyers & breeders)

I’ve personally been caught out by an exceptionally strong SF violet that I genuinely believed was DF — only confirmed once bred to a non-violet and produced both SF and normal offspring.

Equally have been previous caught out with an extremely dark turquoises bird believing it was a SFV😜

That experience reinforced an important lesson:

Breeding results are the only absolute confirmation.

Visual assessment is valuable — but it isn’t foolproof.
