Wonderful visiting Roosevelt Park Zoo representing Save Giraffes Now. RPZ has been an incredible conservation partner, including funding a borehole project in Kenya that is improving water access for wildlife and local communities.

SGN biologist Aggrey Chemwa and I had the opportunity to present SGN field conservation stories and new research to the RPZ team, including findings that drought-driven water shortages are a major factor behind wildlife road crossings and vehicle collisions along a key Kenyan highway. A great example of how science-guided conservation can create practical solutions with real impact.

A few highlights from our recent visit to Tanganika Wildlife Park!

During the trip, Giraffe Veterinary Services worked alongside staff to complete annual giraffe wellness exams, including visual assessments, thermal imaging, and X-rays. We also spent time practicing behaviors that will support future voluntary blood draws — an important step in reducing stress and improving long-term veterinary care.

Preventative medicine and cooperative care training play a huge role in keeping giraffes healthy for years to come.

Working with zoos around the world to improve giraffe health.

The biggest shift? Earlier, lower-stress care; catching issues sooner and often avoiding more invasive procedures.

We’re still learning from every case, but the progress is real.

Grateful to the teams making it happen.
