Facts about FIV ⚠️

Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) is a contagious disease of cats, most commonly spread during fighting (bites, scratches etc) between cats. It can also be spread between pregnant queens and their unborn kittens.

FIV is a life long condition and while this can be a serious condition for some individuals, many are able to live a long and happy life with some special considerations 😸

FIV positive cats are more likely to suffer gum and mouth disease (gingivitis and stomatitis), are higher risk for chronic skin conditions, weight loss, fevers, respiratory disease and in serious cases neurological disease may be observed.

Due to cat fights being a high risk activity for spread of FIV, we strongly recommend to have all outdoor cats vaccinated against FIV. This reduces the risk of exposed cats contracting FIV. However, the safest option is to keep our cats indoors or only allow access outdoors in a safe enclosure or on lead 💉

If you have a new cat, just like Moose here adopted by our Dr. Jen 🤍 especially a kitten adopted from the street, it is also worth having them tested for FIV to plan their future care. This is a simple blood test that we can quickly assess in house at our clinics.

A massive congratulations to Scarlet, Mochi, Leo & Jasper! They did a amazing job at learning their basic commands of sit, look, drop, heel & come 👏🏼 Their confidence levels have sky rocketed & their little friendships have been so sweet to watch develop 🥰

Meanwhile enjoying socialising safely with eachother 🧡 as well as their owners learning about toilet training, puppy emergencies, jumping, biting & everything inbetween to set them up for puppy hood 🐾

Although we may not be washing our dogs as regularly throughout winter, it is still important to keep their coats well kept 🐾

🧥 Dressing your dog in extra layers is an awesome source of warmth, but ensure their coats or jackets are not being left on all the time to avoid matts building up in their fur.

If you do want to have your dog in layers everyday, that is absolutely fine as long as you are taking it off daily to give them a good brush, and check over for any hotspots ♨️
