Meet Dr Jarrin 😊
Jarrin will be working as a locum vet at ERVH for most of September whilst some of our vet staff take their well earned holidays. Please make him welcome!

Jarrin graduated from Massey University in New Zealand in 2020. He spent the next few years working in New Zealand before heading overseas. He's worked in a variety of different practices including London and Cambodia for the past three years. After some major travelling, Jarrin has now made his way back down under to enjoy all that Melbourne has to offer.
He enjoys all aspects of companion animal practice, with a particular interest in internal medicine and welfare.
Outside of work, you’ll find Jarrin hiking around the country, exploring Melbourne’s beautiful suburbs, or searching out a good coffee.

Our amazing nurse Jessy brought in these beautiful home-made dog treats! She normally makes treats for bunnies, but we think she should definitely keep these dog treats in her repertoire 💞

It's the first day of spring!! 🌹💐🌻🪻

Unfortunately for lots of dogs, that means the start of their seasonal allergies.

Signs of allergies in dogs are:
🌼 itchy skin
🌼red, inflamed skin
🌼licking and chewing at paws
🌼ear infections

These signs are more common in spring, due to environmental allergens being more prevalent at this time of year. The biggest trigger in spring is pollen.

If you think your dog might be suffering from seasonal allergies, then give the clinic a call for advice.

Follow Georgie through her stay at the vets for her recent dental procedure! 🦷

It was noticed during a health check that Georgie had some pretty heavy tartar covering her teeth and a dental clean was recommended. Georgie is very special to her mum who only wants the best for her, so upon hearing this, she readily agreed.

The first picture shows Georgie under anaesthetic, with Dr Lee scaling her teeth to clean them. We use an special scaler - just like at the dentist! Georgie is hooked up to our multiparameter monitoring equipment which monitors things such as her heart rate, respiratory rate, oxygen saturation levels and blood pressure. Animals often lose heat quickly while under anaesthetic, especially while having a dental procedure, so a warm air blanket is placed over Georgie to keep her nice and snug. She is also monitored throughout the procedure by a qualified veterinary nurse who records all her vitals on her chart, as well as charts if she has any teeth missing or needing extraction.

The next two photos show a before and after of Georgie's teeth. As you can see there is quite a difference! In the first photo you can see lots of tartar covering her teeth, and in the after photo they are much cleaner! We can't always get all the stains off as you can see in the after photo, but we try our very best. There is often bleeding along the gum line like shown in the picture too, but once all that tartar is removed, the gums become much healthier too.

The next photo is Georgie recovering after her anaesthetic. She is laying on our heat mat, with the warm air blanket still covering her. Her endotracheal (breathing) tube has been removed, but we want her looking more alert before she is returned to the recovery area.

The final photo is showing her having a cuddle with nurse Eva! She had been offered a yummy snack, had just had her intravenous catheter removed and was ready to go home. She still looks pretty sleepy here, but as soon as she saw her mum she perked right up!

We loved having Georgie in for her dental procedure! She was a very well-behaved girl, and we hope her and her mum are happy with her nice clean teeth 💞

💫 One year adoptiversary 💫

Staff pets Truffle and Puffin both celebrated their one year adoptiversary this past week 🥳

Truffle is the all black boy who was adopted by Eva after fostering him for a short while, and Puffin is the black and white girl who was adopted by Sarah from the RSPCA. Both cats had a rough start to life with Truffle starting his life as a street cat, and Puffin being collected during an inspectorate case. Both cats have certainly landed on all four paws with their respective owners, and now get to enjoy a life of luxury.

🐦 Bird flu and cats 🐱

There are more cases of Avian Influenza being diagnosed in Victoria, and around Australia. Cats are at risk of contracting this disease, through coming into contact with birds or wildlife, or through the environment where affected birds have been.

Our advice for cat owners include:

🏡 ideally keeping your cat indoors, as this prevents exposure to birds
🐱 if your cat must go outside, keep them safe in a secure cat run, to help prevent interaction with birds and other wildlife
🍗 avoid feeding raw meat (especially chicken) to cats. Freezing doesn’t kill the virus so avoiding raw feeding for the time being is best.
🥛 avoid giving cats unpasteurised milk
🐦 don’t allow your cat to share water bowls with birds or local wildlife
💦 wash hands regularly
👟 leave shoes outside if you have stepped in bird or animal droppings
🐓 if you have backyard chickens, ensure that your cats cannot access them or their coop

August is Dental Month! 🦷

Did you know that it is estimated that 80% of cats and 70% of dogs have some level of dental disease by the age of three?! Small breed dogs, and certain breeds of cats are more prone to dental disease, and the risk of it increases with age.

Untreated dental disease can cause pain, loss of teeth, and even systemic disease, including damage to the heart and kidneys.

Our pets are really good at hiding pain, so unless your cat or dog have regular veterinary checkups, dental disease can go unnoticed. Some signs you might notice at home are your pet going off their dry food, drooling, bad breath or blood on their teeth or gums (or even toys).
