🐱 The Mystery of the Cat Purr 💭✨

A cat’s purr is one of the most comforting sounds there is — but did you know it’s still a bit of a mystery?

Most of the time, cats purr when they’re happy, relaxed and feeling safe. It’s their way of saying “I’m content” — often while being cuddled, fed, or settling in for a nap. 💤💙

But purring isn’t always about happiness. Cats may also purr when they’re stressed, anxious, injured or unwell. It’s believed that purring can be a form of self-soothing and may even help with healing, as the vibration frequency is thought to support bone and tissue repair.

Kittens begin purring when they’re just a few days old, helping them communicate with their mother — and adult cats often use purring to bond with humans, strengthening that special cat–human connection.

So next time your cat is purring, take a moment to look at the whole picture:
🐾 Their body language
🐾 Their appetite and behaviour
🐾 Any changes to their routine

A purr can mean many things — comfort, communication, or even a quiet request for help.

As the colder weather settles in, our senior pets can really start to feel the effects of winter — especially those living with osteoarthritis or mobility issues ❄️🐾

Older joints often become stiffer and more uncomfortable during cold weather, so a few simple changes at home can make a huge difference to your pet’s comfort and quality of life.

Some helpful winter tips include:
🛏️ Providing thick, supportive bedding to cushion sore joints. Orthopaedic or memory foam beds are excellent for pets with arthritis, helping relieve pressure points and providing extra support.
🔥 Keeping bedding warm and away from draughts, tiled floors and cold outdoor areas.
🧥 Using pet jumpers or coats for older pets who struggle to stay warm.
🚶 Gentle daily exercise to help keep joints mobile without overdoing it.
🍽️ Maintaining a healthy weight to reduce stress on painful joints.
💊 Speaking with your vet about arthritis management options, supplements or pain relief if your pet seems stiff or slower to get up.

Signs your pet may be struggling with arthritis can include stiffness after resting, reluctance to jump or climb stairs, slowing down on walks or changes in behaviour.

Our vets and nurses are always happy to discuss ways to keep your older pets comfortable through winter and beyond 💙

Because our senior pets deserve extra cosy cuddles this season too 🐶🐱

🐾 Ever wondered what it takes to become a vet nurse in Australia? 🐾

Veterinary nursing is an incredibly rewarding career, but it also requires commitment, study, and hands-on training to develop the skills needed to care for animals every day. ❤️

In Australia, most veterinary nurses begin their journey through formal qualifications such as a Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing, often completed through TAFE or registered training organisations, alongside structured workplace training in a veterinary clinic. Some also pursue further studies through diploma-level qualifications or university pathways in animal science or veterinary nursing-related fields.

Vet nurses are so much more than cuddles (though we do love those too 🐶🐱). They are highly trained professionals who are essential members of the veterinary team.

During their training, vet nurses learn a wide range of skills including:
🐾 Animal handling and behaviour
🐾 Surgical nursing and anaesthesia support
🐾 Radiology and laboratory testing
🐾 Emergency and critical care
🐾 Dentistry
🐾 Nutrition and patient care
🐾 Client communication and education

Alongside their studies, trainee nurses complete extensive practical experience in clinics, learning on the job under the supervision of qualified veterinarians and experienced nurses. It’s a mix of classroom learning, assessments, and real-world clinical training.

This career also requires compassion, teamwork, attention to detail, and the ability to stay calm in challenging and emotional situations.

We are incredibly proud of our veterinary nurses and trainees who dedicate themselves to caring for your pets every day. Next time you visit, please say hello and thank them for the incredible work they do behind the scenes. 💙

Sweet Raffy recently visited us to have a cyst removed, and we’re very pleased to say he did beautifully during his procedure under General Anaesthesia 🐾💙

Before any anaesthetic procedure, patient safety is always our top priority. That’s why we strongly recommend pre-anaesthetic blood testing. These tests help us assess important organ function, including the liver and kidneys, and can alert us to hidden issues that may not be visible during a physical examination alone.

One of the wonderful advantages of our clinic is having an in-house laboratory, which means we can run these blood tests right here and receive results quickly — often within minutes. This allows our vets to make informed decisions before anaesthesia and tailor care specifically to each patient.

Thank you to handsome Raffy for being such a brave boy and for all the cuddles during his stay with us 🐶✨

Winter weather doesn’t have to mean bored puppies and restless dogs! ☔❄️🐾

Young active dogs still need plenty of physical exercise and mental stimulation during the colder rainy months to stay happy, healthy and out of mischief. Here are a few simple ways to keep your energetic companions entertained this winter:

🐕 Shorter walks more often — If the weather is miserable, try a few shorter walks throughout the day instead of one long outing.

🧠 Mental enrichment — Food puzzles, snuffle mats, treat hunts, and training sessions are fantastic ways to tire busy brains.

🎾 Indoor games — Tug, hide and seek, hallway fetch, and obstacle courses can all burn energy indoors.

🦴 Chews and enrichment toys — Long-lasting chews and frozen enrichment treats help keep young dogs occupied on rainy afternoons.

🧥 Keep them warm and dry — Waterproof coats and warm bedding help make winter adventures much more enjoyable.

🐶 Continue socialisation — Puppy school, daycare, training classes, and supervised playdates are still important during winter months.

Remember — a bored young dog will often create their own entertainment… and your shoes or couch cushions may pay the price! 😂

If you’d like advice on suitable enrichment toys, winter care, nutrition or exercise for your dog, our vets and nurses are always happy to help.
