Our 2025 Equine Podiatry seminar is in full swing. Dr. Karen Shaw, along with farriers Tiffany Gardner CJF, APF, and Danny Dunson, are presenting a podiatry-focused lab and lecture series on optimizing shoeing strategies to support foot health, taking into account structure, conformation, injury, pathology, movement, and performance.

2025 CLINICIAN ANNOUNCEMENT 📣

Dr. Claudia Sonder grew up in Massachusetts as the fourth of five children. She professed to her parents at the age of five that she wanted to be a veterinarian and spent her childhood years riding and caring for horses.
She showed hunters and jumpers as a teenager and worked for a large equine show jumping barn. Claudia attended Tufts University as an undergraduate. where she competed regularly in the Intercollegiate Equestrian circuit while enrolled in the pre-med program. Claudia was accepted into UC Davis Veterinary School in 1990 and graduated after completing the equine track in 1995.

Dr. Sonder has a long history with this vet clinic, both as an associate veterinarian and as previous owner. She is happy to be back in the saddle as an owner-partner at Napa Valley Equine.

Dr. Sonder has a special interest in diagnosing and treating lameness in sport horses, utilizing the latest in digital imaging and joint injection procedures. She also enjoys equine neonatal medicine and assisted reproduction. In her “spare” time Claudia enjoys spending time outdoors with her three children, Molly, Mason and Merren.

Equine podiatry + Chipotle = not your average lunch break. 🌯

Last week, NCAEP, in collaboration with Dechra, was thrilled to host UC Davis vet med students for a lunch and learn with our very own Dr. Karen Shaw.

A reminder from the CVMA to all of the veterinary professionals providing vital medical care to animals during the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles:

"In 2019, the CVMA worked to change California state law to permit veterinarians within a 25-mile radius of a declared disaster to provide medications to animals without a Veterinarian-Client-Patient Relationship (VCPR). The law can be found in California Business and Professions Code 4826.4."

Check out the graphic above for hauling tips in the event of a medical emergency that requires transportation to an equine hospital. If you are unsure about the type of health issues that warrant an after-hours call, always contact your primary veterinarian. Lastly, don’t forget to have a discussion with your horse doctor regarding their after-hours policies and availability for responding to emergency calls.
