🩺 Guess the diagnosis! NVE was called out to see a lovely horse, that lives and runs about on a hill, with a very swollen front leg. The swelling was most dramatic around the fetlock joint 😱 That would make anyone worry! Would you think a swollen leg could be caused by something deep in the hoof? See the pictures below for clues 🕵️

We are watching the progress of the closely - Napa Community Animal Response Team - Napa CART is being activated in phases as county needs dictate and change. A large animal shelter is being prepared at Napa Valley Horseman’s at 1200 Foster Rd. Napa

Requests for animal assistance should go through local law enforcement at the scene or Napa County Dispatch at 707-253-4451.

Be prepared, be safe, and be proactive.

Napa CART has been activated to set up the shelter at Napa Valley Horsemen's Association at 1200 Foster Road.

If you are a Napa CART volunteer and available to deploy to NVHA this morning, we plan to start at 1000 and likely work until noon.

🥕 We use this simple test to assess subtle changes in our patient’s oral comfort! 🦷 🥕

As silly as it sounds, the "carrot test" can be used to help diagnose tooth aches in our equine companions.

Equine odontoclastic tooth resorption and hypercementosis (EORTH) is a dental condition that affects the incisors of middle-aged horses and older. As the name suggests, it acts by both resorbing the teeth and then producing large amounts of cementum (a hard substance that anchors the teeth into place).

Clinical signs such as difficulty chewing, teeth discoloration and painful gums are highly suspicious for this disease, but you can also offer your horse a carrot to assess how comfortable they are biting down. If it seems painful for them while biting the carrot, they could have EORTH!

Your veterinarian can do an oral examination and take dental radiographs to confirm the diagnosis. This is a progressive disease so there is no cure, but there are management strategies that can improve their comfort.

If you are concerned that your horse may have EORTH or is experiencing oral pain, contact your veterinarian so that they may further evaluate and suggest treatment options.

Have you heard the saying "No hoof, No horse"? It's true! These huge animals have delicate little feet.
That's why farriers have such an important job and are integral in helping maintain a healthy hoof. Shout-out to all the farriers we work with and all the other farriers out there keeping horses comfortable, one foot at a time.

Proper foot care is the cornerstone of maintaining a sound horse, and a good farrier is an essential part of your equine's healthcare team, keeping your horse’s feet balanced and well-supported.
