Your pet's microbiome is the foundation of their health, influencing digestion, immunity, mood, and even inflammation. 🌿

The good news? You can support it every single day through food.

Here are a few simple ways to nourish your pet's gut naturally:
🌱 Fiber-rich foods - pumpkin and leafy greens feed beneficial gut bacteria and keep digestion moving smoothly.

🥛 Fermented foods - small amounts of plain kefir, yogurt (if tolerated), or pet-safe fermented veggies can introduce beneficial bacteria to the gut.

🫐 Polyphenol-rich plants - blue berries help reduce inflammation and support a diverse, thriving microbiome.

🍽️ Variety in the diet - a diverse diet equals a diverse microbiome. Even small rotations in what you feed can make a meaningful difference.

✅ Quality matters - whole, organic, minimally processed foods support the gut in ways that heavily processed diets simply can't.

If your dog can't stop itching, the answer might be more than skin deep. 🐾

Allergies are one of the most common causes of chronic itchy skin in dogs and the triggers might surprise you. Environmental allergens like pollen, grass, and dust mites are frequent culprits, as are food sensitivities to common proteins like chicken, beef, and dairy. Even everyday household products and flea saliva can set off a reaction in sensitive dogs.

From a holistic perspective, addressing allergies means looking at the whole picture, not just the itch. That includes in-depth allergy testing to identify the true root cause, supporting the immune system, transitioning to a fresh whole foods low-allergenic diet, and incorporating anti-inflammatory herbs to help the body heal from the inside out.

🌿 Without knowing what your pet is actually reacting to, treatment is really just guesswork, which is why testing is such an important first step.
Your dog doesn't have to just live with it.

Dandelion leaf is one of spring's most underrated gifts for pet health!

Here's why we love it:

🌿 Gentle detoxification: dandelion leaf supports the kidneys in flushing waste and toxins from the body, making it a wonderful spring cleanse for your dog after a long winter
💪 Nutrient dense: packed with vitamins A, C, and K, plus calcium, iron, and potassium
🛡️ Antioxidant rich: helps protect cells from oxidative damage and supports overall immune health
🌱 Digestive support: the prebiotic fiber in dandelion leaf feeds beneficial gut bacteria and promotes healthy digestion

One simple way to offer Dandelion to your dog is by gentling steaming the leaves and adding a small amount to their food.

⚠️ The most important thing, make sure any dandelion you use is certified organic and pesticide-free. Never harvest from lawns that have been treated with herbicides or chemicals.

As always, check with your holistic vet before introducing new herbs, especially if your dog is on any medications. 🌿

🌿 Feeding with the seasons is a core principle in veterinary food therapy.

As the environment shifts, so do a pet’s nutritional needs. In Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine, spring is the season of the Wood Element, associated with the Liver and Gallbladder.

This is a time to support the body with foods that are lighter, green, and gently cooling in nature.

When appropriate, spring feeding may include:
• Proteins such as rabbit, duck, turkey, and whitefish
• Small amounts of lightly cooked leafy greens like kale, spinach, or dandelion greens
• Functional additions such as spirulina

These foods are selected and prepared intentionally, based on the individual pet and their overall balance.

Please note the foods featured in this post are for dogs. Please consult your vet about what seasonal foods are suitable for cats.

Spring in Northern California brings beautiful green hills… and an increase in ticks.

With recent rainfall and warm temperatures, tick populations can rise significantly. In areas like Marin County, infection rates for Lyme disease can be as high as 30%.

A few simple ways to reduce risk for your pet:
• Stay in the center of trails and avoid brushy or wooded areas
• Check your dog daily, especially after hikes (ears, between toes, under legs)
• Regular grooming and bathing can help you catch ticks early
• Use a tick prevention strategy that fits your dog’s lifestyle

There are a number of tick repellents available. Dr. Kim often recommends Evict RTU applied before hikes. For dogs who are very active or frequently in high-risk areas, stronger (including conventional) repellents may be appropriate.

If you find a tick, remove it carefully, and consider saving it. Ticks can be tested for diseases like Lyme through local labs.

In Napa County, tick testing is available through the Napa County Water & Tick Testing Lab:

🌞🐾 Spring Sunshine & Your Pet’s Health 🐾🌞

As days get longer, safe time outdoors does more than lift our mood, it supports your pet’s overall wellbeing, too.

While dogs and cats don’t produce vitamin D from sunlight the same way humans do (they rely primarily on diet), natural light exposure still plays an important role in regulating:

✨ Circadian rhythm (sleep–wake cycles)
✨ Hormonal balance
✨ Immune resilience
✨ Mood and nervous system health

Morning light in particular helps signal the body to reset after winter’s shorter days. Even 10–20 minutes of calm outdoor time, a gentle walk, backyard sniffing, or sunbathing on a patio, can support metabolic and emotional balance.

Of course, moderation matters:
☀️ Avoid peak heat
☀️ Provide shade and fresh water
☀️ Be mindful of light-colored or thin-coated pets

Spring is a beautiful reminder that sometimes the most powerful medicine is simple: fresh air, movement, and sunshine. 🌿
