Why Your Cat Is Straining with Diarrhea

• Large bowel inflammation: Irritation in the colon tricks the body into feeling like it needs to p**p constantly.

• Constipation impaction: Sometimes, hard stool is stuck, and liquid diarrhea leaks around the blockage, causing a false sense of straining.

• Common triggers: Parasites (like Giardia), sudden food changes, stress, infections, or inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

What You Should Do

• Provide fresh water: Keep your cat hydrated, as diarrhea causes rapid fluid loss.

• Avoid human medications: Never give over-the-counter human anti-diarrheal drugs, as they can be toxic to cats.

• Contact a vet: Seek professional advice if the diarrhea lasts more than 24 hours or if you see red flags.

A cat straining in the litter box is a critical medical emergency that requires immediate veterinary attention, as it often signals a life-threatening urinary blockage.

Determining the Issue: P*e vs. P**p

• Straining to Urinate: Look for squatting low with little to no urine produced, small drops of bloody urine, or crying in pain. This is extremely dangerous, especially for male cats who can completely block their urinary tract within 24 hours.

• Straining to Defecate: Look for an arched back with hard, dry stools, or excessive licking of the rear. This indicates constipation or dehydration, which also needs a vet if it lasts over 24–48 hours.

Common Causes

• Urethral Obstruction: Mucus, crystals, or stones block urine flow in males—a fatal emergency.

• Feline Idiopathic Cystitis (FIC): Painful bladder inflammation triggered by stress.

• Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) or Bladder Stones

• Constipation or Megacolon: Severe backup of stool in the colon.

What You Should Do
1. Go to the vet right away: Do not wait to see if it resolves. If your cat is producing no urine and crying, call an emergency vet immediately.
2. Check the box: Note whether they are passing any urine or stool, or if there is blood.
3. Prevent future issues: Increase fresh water access with pet water fountains, feed wet food, and minimize environmental stress.
