@pupbealady Besides a quick check-up after the #pawrents adopted me last fall, today was my first big girl appointment at the vet! I weighed in at a whopping 50 lbs (joke’s on my pawrents who thought they were adopting a 35 lb dog) and got poked with a few needles (get vaxxed, ya’ll!). I also finally got microchipped! Not sure why so many #hoomans are worked up about microchips. Seems kind of cool to me. Anyways, happy to report I’m a healthy pup! Thanks @citypawsanimalhospital!

Hi. My name is Tango, but they call me Tangy!
My favorite activity is hikes in my senior doggo backpack, and the weirdest thing I do is rub my face on the wooden coffee table.

We are thrilled to welcome a second doctor to the CityPaws family. Meet Dr. Sarah Burke ( yes, we have three doctors named Sarah :))

Dr. Burke will work out of our 14th Street location. Below is a bit about Dr. Burke. Photo to follow real soon.

Dr. Sarah Burke hails from Gainesville, FL. She attended the University of Florida and earned her Bachelor’s and Doctorate as a proud Gator Grad. Dr. Burke initially worked in equine medicine, and at the start of career did an internship at Pilchuck Veterinary Hospital in Snohomish, WA. She then spent several years traveling the world as an equine veterinarian with a circus! But after marrying her husband, a US Naval officer, she made the transition into the small animal medicine world to make those change of duty moves easier. They even spent time stationed overseas in Cuba.

Now that Dr. Burke has returned stateside to DC, she is back focused on her love of dogs, cats and our pocket pet exotic friends. Her veterinary passion is the care and love of our older animal companions out there, as well as an interest in emergency medicine. She herself has two cats, and a beloved, very well behaved, most handsome German Shepard ever named Iggy.

In her spare time, Dr. Burke can be found watching any sports that Gators play and outside getting the zoomies out of Iggy. Go Navy, Beat Army!

We have exciting things happening with our new doctors joining the CityPaws team. Dr Miriam Fink will join us tomorrow at our Uptown location. Let's give her a warm welcome aboard!

Miriam Fink, a San Diego native, knew she wanted to be a vet since she was three years old. As an avid Ranger Rick subscriber, dog breed book purchaser, and Critter Camp attendee, she knew working with animals was her passion. At the age of 11 she got her first dog, a Jack Russell Terrier named Pokey. She watched her family and friends fall in love with a dog, and she experienced how incredible a bond with a dog can be. The bond she made with her dog further elucidated that veterinary medicine was her calling.

She made her way to the east coast where she obtained her BS in Health Policy and Biology from Brandeis University in 2015. There she learned the many intersections between human, animal, and environmental health, collectively known as One Health. She continued to explore this passion for One Health and veterinary medicine at University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine where she received her VMD in 2021. There she learned she is truly passionate for enhancing the human-animal bond people can have with their pets. Her medical interests include preventative medicine, internal medicine, dermatology, ophthalmology, rehabilitation medicine, public health, and natural disaster relief.

In her spare time you can find her exploring new restaurants, watching the latest Bravo TV show, and seeking out a new dog to call family.
Miriam is very excited to start her career in Washington, DC and very much looks forward to meeting your four legged family members.

More pets are lost on the #FourthOfJuly than any day of the year; in fact, 30% more from July 4th thru 6th than any other time of year. The noise can be panic inducing and disorienting for all animals including wildlife and even some humans.

There are things that people with pets can do.
1. Keep them inside as much as possible for a few days days leading up to and following the fourth
2. Make them feel safe by staying near them if possible 3. Keep doors and windows closed to keep noise out.

Even when you think the temperature is OK or feels fine to you, your fur kids may feel very differently. Animals don't sweat like humans, so they heat up a lot quicker than we do. Their primary source of cooling down is through panting which is woefully inefficient when exposed to heat (they also cool down through their paws, so be aware of this when putting booties on your pups).

The #1 cause of heatstroke in dogs is leaving them in a vehicle! Never-ever leave a pet in a car even on a mild day. While you're in the air-conditioned store grabbing a few things, your car is quickly turning into an oven. Pets can suffer brain damage and die from heatstroke.

Helpful Tips: Walk in the early morning and late evening when it is cooler. Carry water with you. Limit exercise on hot days. Avoid surfaces that absorb heat, like asphalt, pavement, metal, sand, and car seats. These materials absorb heat from the sun and can stay hot for hours (even after the sun has gone down). Temperatures on these surfaces can exceed 145° F (62.7c)‼️

Keep your fur kids safe and cool! Fans, cool surfaces, frozen treats, kiddie pools, cool washcloth under armpits, and sprinklers can all help keep the kids cooler on hot days.

Make sure fresh water and a cool place to rest is available at all times.
