This sweet kitty came to see Dr. Joe today for a routine spay surgery and removal of what was suspected to be an abdominal mass. The crew discovered something too cool not to share!
The “mass” turned out to be an ectopic pregnancy - a rare condition where a fetus develops outside of the uterus. In this case, a retained fetus had become attached near one of her ovaries rather than remaining within the uterine horns
While ectopic pregnancies are uncommon in cats, they can sometimes form after fetal loss and remain hidden for long periods of time, eventually appearing as a mysterious abdominal mass. Thankfully, surgery allowed us to safely remove the abnormal tissue and get this girl feeling much better.
Cases like these are a reminder that every surgery is a little adventure and that even routine procedures can uncover something truly unique! This kitty is recovering beautifully and is now back at home, enjoying the comforts of her favorite sunny spot and a well-deserved nap 💙
