This sweet kitty came to see Dr. Joe today for a routine spay surgery and removal of what was suspected to be an abdominal mass. The crew discovered something too cool not to share!

The “mass” turned out to be an ectopic pregnancy - a rare condition where a fetus develops outside of the uterus. In this case, a retained fetus had become attached near one of her ovaries rather than remaining within the uterine horns

While ectopic pregnancies are uncommon in cats, they can sometimes form after fetal loss and remain hidden for long periods of time, eventually appearing as a mysterious abdominal mass. Thankfully, surgery allowed us to safely remove the abnormal tissue and get this girl feeling much better.

Cases like these are a reminder that every surgery is a little adventure and that even routine procedures can uncover something truly unique! This kitty is recovering beautifully and is now back at home, enjoying the comforts of her favorite sunny spot and a well-deserved nap 💙

Most of us remember Bob Barker’s famous sign-off, “Spay and Neuter your pets”, but it wasn’t just a catchy slogan it was actually pretty solid medical advice

This handsome pup came to us for a surgical consult regarding a very concerning mass. Naturally, everyone was worried. The good news? The solution was much simpler than expected. After being neutered, his discomfort resolved, and he was feeling much more like himself.

As pets age, being left intact can increase their risk for reproductive tumors, prostate disease, mammary tumors, and other hormone-related health issues.

So while the Cone of Shame may feel like the end of the world for a few days...it’s temporary

Preventing cancer and other serious health problems can last a lifetime

Your pet may not thank you for the cone, but their future self just might ❤️

It was Friday...or as we apparently call it around here: You Ate What Friday!?

Today’s menu included everything from a literal pit hanging out where it definitely didn’t belong, to a small intestinal perforation that needed immediate attention. Because apparently pets everywhere got together and decided, “Let’s see what Rusty Ridge is up to today”

We’re incredibly grateful for our team who jumped from case to case without missing a beat. Whether it’s an upset stomach, a surgical emergency, or one of those “how did they even manage that?” situations, they show up every single time ready to rock and roll

We know emergencies don’t always happen during convenient hours, and when families are scared and pets need help, we do everything in our power to be there. So here’s to another wild Friday, a lot of coffee, a few extra gray hairs, and a team that continues to go above and beyond

Tomorrow’s another day... and we’ll be here, just like we always are 💙

Sometimes it takes a village

When an immediate C-section comes in, it’s all hands on deck - 8 pairs to be exact!

Grateful to share that the surgery was a success, and mom is now resting comfortably at home with her eight beautiful pups

Moments like these remind us how fortunate we are to care for your pets during life’s most important moments ❤️

With all the storms and flash flooding lately, we had to be prepared for every possibility!

Black coffee darker than the sky? ✅
Sporting the newest Dunkin-approved life jacket? ✅
Ready for whatever Mother Nature throws our way? Just another day at Rusty Ridge✅

On a more serious note, with storm season and fireworks right around the corner, now is the time to make a plan for your pets. Make sure they’re secure, have updated identification, and that you know where they’ll be during severe weather or loud celebrations

If your pet may need anxiety medications or calming supplements, don’t wait until the forecast is questionable or the fireworks are already booming. Reach out to your veterinary team ahead of time so everyone is prepared

And if you’re ordering medications online, it never hurts to build in a little extra time. Between shipping delays, weather, and packages occasionally taking unexpected scenic routes, it’s always better to have medications before you need them - a little basic planning goes a long way!!

This pup was rushed in after being hit by a car. Thankfully, there were no significant internal injuries, but he wasn’t quite out of the woods yet. X-rays revealed a severe radius and ulna fracture requiring surgical repair

Our surgical team quickly got to work with pre-operative planning, implant selection, and fracture mapping before heading to surgery. After carefully removing damaged bone fragments and traumatic tissue, the fracture was reconstructed and stabilized with a bone plate, giving this young pup the best chance for a successful recovery

Cases like these are a reminder that accidents happen in an instant, but having a plan and acting quickly can make all the difference. Thanks to his owner’s fast response and your favorite veterinary team’s readiness to step in when needed, this pup is now resting comfortably and starting his journey back to four-legged adventures

Just another day at Rusty Ridge, there for you when your pets need you most!

While it may not be dominating headlines, the recent confirmation of New World Screwworm in a dog in New Mexico and a few ruminants in Texas serves as an important reminder that some threats extend far beyond a single animal

This is not just another parasite

New World Screwworm is a devastating pest whose larvae feed on living tissue, causing severe wounds, infections, suffering, and even death if left untreated. While dogs and cats can be affected, the greatest concern is often for livestock, wildlife - our farmers, ranchers, producers

A single outbreak can have widespread consequences. Threats to livestock health and supply increase operational expenses, which ultimately impact the cost of beef, milk, and other products. This is a significant economic impact affecting local and national agriculture

The U.S. worked incredibly hard to eradicate New World Screwworm decades ago, which is why every suspected case is taken very seriously. Early detection and rapid veterinary intervention remain critical tools for preventing its spread

As summer travel, livestock shows, rodeos, fairs, and 4-H events ramp up, awareness becomes even more important. If you’re traveling with pets, exhibiting livestock, or spending time around animals from different regions, take a few extra moments to monitor for wounds, unusual swelling, drainage, or maggot infestations and seek veterinary attention promptly if concerns arise

Fortunately, this is not currently a local problem for our area, but preparation and awareness are some of the best defenses we have

Strong partnerships between animal owners, producers, and veterinary teams help protect not only individual animals but entire communities and industries.

Knowledge is Power!
Stay informed, stay vigilant, and enjoy a safe summer!
