Anxious pet behavior can put undue stress on your relationship with your pet because of your pet's destructive or reactive behavior, hypervigilance, and unpredictability. The good news is, there are an extraordinary number of ways to address your pet's anxiety. This month, we are going to talk about all the various common methods to help calm your pet's anxieties.

First, let's identify what pet anxiety is. Anxiety, itself, is an abnormal and overwhelming sense of unease and distress in response to a real or perceived threat. Pet anxiety can be defined by three general definitions:

- Separation anxiety: Dogs with separation anxiety react with significant distress soon after being left by their owner.

- Generalized anxiety: This is a constant state of hypervigilance and sensitivity in pets, who are perpetually on edge, reactive to numerous triggers, and do not adapt well to new situations.

- Situational anxiety: Pets respond with anxiety centered around a known stimulus, such as noise aversion. Noise-averse pets are hypersensitive to loud noises such as thunderstorms or fireworks, which often induce terror and panic in the pet.

A significant part of diagnosing and treating age-related diseases in pets is at-home monitoring. If you have a senior pet, keep an eye out for:

- Increased or decreased appetite
- Difficulty chewing or food falling from the mouth
- Increased drinking and urination
- Incontinence
- Difficulty rising, climbing stairs, or walking on slick floors
- Unwillingness to go for walks or play
- Attitude changes, such as increased aggression or apathy
- Standing in corners
- Bumping into walls
- Disorientation

Senior pets are much more likely to experience a variety of common age-related diseases. Depending on your pet's clinic signs and lab findings, your pet may be at a higher risk for:

- Osteoarthritis
- Dental disease
- Thyroid disease
- Chronic kidney disease
- Cognitive dysfunction
- Cancer

Preventative care should, ideally, start at a young age as it promotes keeping pets healthy by routinely preventing and screening for disease. When it comes to Senior Pets, preventative care commonly includes:

- Biannual exams: generally, adult pets should visit the vet at least once a year, but senior/geriatric pets require more frequent monitoring.
- Laboratory work: blood and urine testing is necessary to monitor your pet’s internal functioning, which can change rapidly with age.
- Parasite prevention: All pets should receive routine deworming, and heartworm, flea, and tick prevention.
- Vaccinations: In general, all pets should remain up-to-date on their core vaccines and any vaccines pertinent to their lifestyle. However, vaccine recommendations can change as pets age.

This month, we are going to talk a bit about senior pet care.

What classifies as a Senior Pet? In general, a dog or cat who has reached 7 years of age is considered senior. This can be shocking to some pet owners, but pets age much more quickly than people do. In fact, a large 8-year-old dog is the equivalent of a 65-year-old person.

Unfortunately, as we can only expect, old age comes with an increased risk for disease, mobility problems, sensory loss, and other issues. The term "geriatric" is often used to describe aging pets like this.

Routine visits to the Vet are absolutely critical at this stage in your pet's life.

Next week, we'll discuss preventative care measures you can take for your Senior Pet.

Due to the recent snowfall last night we are going to try and open at 10am instead of our normal 8am.
