🎃🐾 Halloween Safety Tips for Our Warrior Dog Families! 🐾🎃
Halloween is full of fun for us, but for our dogs, the constant doorbells, unfamiliar costumes, and excitement can be overwhelming. This is especially true for dogs who are still building confidence and learning to feel safe in their homes. 🧡
To our amazing fosters and adopters, here are a few simple ways to keep your pups safe and comfortable this Halloween!
🚪 Create a barrier at the front door. Use a securely installed baby gate or exercise pen to block access to the entryway. These are extra precautions, not an invitation for your dog to greet trick-or-treaters!
🏡 Give your dog a safe space AWAY from the door. A quiet room with a cozy bed, fresh water, and a favorite enrichment activity is a much better place to spend the evening. Your dog doesn't need to see or interact with all the Halloween excitement.
🐕 Consider a drag leash. If your dog will be moving around the house, a lightweight leash attached to a secure harness can provide an extra layer of safety if you need to guide them away from the door. Only use this while supervised, and remove it when they're alone to prevent snagging or entanglement.
🔇 Turn down the spooky sounds. White noise, calming music, closed curtains, and silencing the doorbell can help reduce stress.
🏷️ Double-check ID tags. Make sure your dog's collar or harness fits securely and their identification information is up to date.
🍫 Keep candy and decorations out of reach. Chocolate, xylitol-containing candy, and decorations can all pose risks to curious pups.
👻 It's okay to skip the festivities! If your dog is nervous, consider leaving candy outside and enjoying a quiet evening together. And if you're taking the kids trick-or-treating, your dog will likely be much happier staying safely at home.
Remember, even dogs who normally do well with visitors can become frightened or overwhelmed on Halloween. A gate or pen is an added safety measure, but keeping your dog comfortably separated from the front door is the best precaution.
🧡 Our dogs don't need to participate in Halloween to have a happy one. Sometimes the best treat is a peaceful evening, a comfy bed, and knowing they're safe.
