Angels of Assisi Changing the definition of an animal shelter by offering services to benefit the community’s pets and the people who love them. Help is here.

Angels of Assisi is changing the role of an animal shelter to include resources, programs, and services to benefit the pets in our communities and the people who love them. We are an independent, nonprofit animal welfare organization serving Southwest Virginia and West Virginia. Along with our Adoption Center and Farm Sanctuary, we offer a Community Pet Clinic, Rural Veterinary Care, Cruelty Inves

tigations, Disaster Response, and a Safety Net Program for those needing temporary help due to domestic violence or emergency situations.

Double the cuteness, double the love! Angel and Garfield are a sweet bonded pair who bring twice the cuddles, twice the purrs, and all the charm you could ever want. These two have spent their entire lives side by side and after being owner surrendered in July, they’re ready to find their next forever home together. At 5.5 years old, Garfield and Angel are the perfect mix of playful and snuggly. When they’re not curled up together, you’ll find them soaking up attention from their favorite humans or dozing off in the coziest corners (Angel has recently claimed a drawer in our cat room as his personal nap spot 😻).

If you’re looking to add Angel and Garfield to your family, visit our Adoption Center any day between 12–6pm at 725 Franklin Rd!

Doodle found his forever foster home! We are so happy this 12-year-old boy will now be spending his years with the most loving family AND a matching Pekingese sibling! Doodle's mom gave us a little update: "Doodle is doing wonderfully! We all love him so much already and he’s adjusting nicely and sweetly to his new fur sister. I think he actually chose us and we wouldn’t have it any other way!! Thank you!!" 🏡

Thank you to The Grey Muzzle Organization for their grant that allows us to not only give senior pets the medical care they need, but to also find them long-term foster homes to live out their golden years. 🥰

If you're interested in fostering a senior pet, please reach out to [email protected].

❗Foster needed❗for a special kitten, Macaron. This sweet 5-month-old boy is FIP positive and needs a place to hang for 4 months while he finishes his treatment. He's good at taking his daily medicine and otherwise just needs to come into our Clinic once a month for bloodwork. FIP is not contagious so he can be around other pets in your home! Please reach out to Ethan at [email protected] if you're able to help give Macaron a loving place to heal!

We ended the summer strong! ☀️ In August, our clinic and adoption teams helped hundreds of pets in our community, from 1,150 spay/neuters and 98 adoptions to countless exams, vaccines, and microchips. We’re so grateful for the support and trust that makes this work possible, and we can’t wait to see what September brings!

Ben's Adoption Puts in Motion 🌊
At Angels of Assisi's August adoption event in Virginia, Stu C. and his wife, Casey, made sure they were first in line to meet Ben, a mixed-breed puppy they had fallen in love with online. They had recently said goodbye to Camden, their family dog of 12 years, and felt ready to welcome a rescue pup into the house.

Angels of Assisi's event was hosted as part of , the ASPCA's national campaign highlighting and supporting the lifesaving work of shelters and rescues across the nation! So far, we have 600+ animal organizations participating and have been able to provide grants to some organizations and shelters, like Angels of Assisi, to help waive adoption fees and support their shelter operations further.

7-month-old Ben and his sister, Lego, were born in Alabama to a feral dog who was being cared for by a local family. The pair were two of the 10 animals that found their homes during the event! Ben, now called Benny, has settled into Stu and Casey's home and routine. He even walks their kids to school every day 🚌

Ben’s adoption is one of many animals impacted by . When you help one, you help many by freeing up resources for the shelter to save even more animals. Visit https://aspca.org/TheRescueEffect to learn more about and find a participating shelter close to you!

Catching up on adoptions for the last few weeks! So many 🏡, and we are especially grateful that 20 of our 57 guinea pigs have gone off to their new homes! We also had some long-timer cats find their perfect families, as well as Jilly, our little senior pup, who will now live her golden years in a loving home. Thank you to those who chose to adopt and congratulations to all the new families!

They're here! And they're even cuter and sweeter in person. Despite what these 14 WVA dogs have been through, many of them still wagged their tails nonstop when they saw us. They have severe fleas and some have bad matting which we will treat right away.

THANK YOU to Jamie and the rest of the McDowell County community for helping these babies. And THANK YOU to everyone who has donated, we are blown away! Because of you, each of these dogs will know what it's like to be safe, healthy and loved.

We will continue to post updates and let everyone know when they are available for adoption in the coming weeks!
