Angels of Assisi

Angels of Assisi Changing the definition of an animal shelter by offering services to benefit the community’s pets and the people who love them.

Community Pet Clinic: Mon-Sat 8:30am-6pm
Adoption Center: Daily 12-6pm

Help is here. Angels of Assisi is changing the role of an animal shelter to include resources, programs, and services to benefit the pets in our communities and the people who love them. We are an independent, nonprofit animal welfare organization serving Southwest Virginia and West Virginia. Along with our Adoption Center and

Farm Sanctuary, we offer a Community Pet Clinic, Rural Veterinary Care, Cruelty Investigations, Disaster Response, and a Safety Net Program for those needing temporary help due to domestic violence or emergency situations.

Adoptable Jeter, Chili and Rose all had some great Downtown Dogs outings the past few days! Jeter had a 2-mile walk on the Greenway, enjoyed lunch at The Green Goat, and then got a pup cup! Chili got to walk around the Roanoke College campus and Carvins Cove, and Rose went for a "walk" (she's more of a lounger 😁) around the neighborhood. Thank you to the thoughtful volunteers who took them out!

Jeter and Rose just hit their 3-month mark in the shelter, while Chili just passed his 2-month. These 3 dogs would make wonderful additions to any family, and we know their perfect match is out there! Come by our Adoption Center open 12-6pm today to meet them!

June is and there's no better time to make sure your pet has this tiny but lifesaving form of identification. A microchip may be small (about the size of a grain of rice), but it can make a huge difference if your pet ever goes missing. The quick, harmless procedure provides lifelong identification and greatly increases the chances of being reunited with your furry family member.

Does your pet already have a microchip? Take a moment to make sure your contact information is up to date.

Need one? We offer microchips with lifetime registration for just $25 here at our Community Pet Clinic. You can also visit our Mobile Pet Health Clinic on Friday, June 12 from 10am-2pm at Roanoke Salem Plaza to get your pet microchipped.

As an extra layer of protection, we also recommend creating a free profile through Petco Love Lost, which uses facial recognition technology to help reunite lost pets with their families.

Happy June! ☀️ We've got a busy month ahead starting with a Mobile Pet Health Clinic with Roanoke Police Department - VA next Friday, June 12. We also have another adoption event with Small Things at The Green Goat on Father's Day, and of course our MEGA Adoption Event is June 27!

Please note there will be no Volunteer Meeting this month. Our next meeting will be held July 9 from 6:30-7:30pm.

We hope to see everyone soon!

Another week, another group of lucky pets heading home! We were especially excited to see the first of our Puerto Rico pups find their amazing families this week. After quite the journey, there’s nothing better than watching them trade kennels for couches, toys, and people to call their own.

We're hoping this week brings even more happy endings for the Puerto Rico crew and all the other wonderful kittens, cats, and dogs still waiting for their turn.

📢 Junior here with a very important announcement: the treat jar and toy tower are looking a little sad! Our Adoption Center dogs are running low on treats and dog-friendly toys, both of which make a big difference while they wait for their forever homes. Treats help with training and learning good manners, while toys keep their minds busy, build confidence, and both make shelter life a whole lot brighter.

If you'd like to remind dogs like Junior what good boys and girls they are, donations can be dropped off at AoA between 8:30am and 6pm, or mailed directly to:

Today is and while we all love summer adventures, warmer temperatures can be dangerous for our four-legged friends. And while outdoor Downtown Dogs outings are paused when temperatures reach above 80 degrees, volunteers are still welcome to take dogs to dog-friendly stores or spend time with them at home, provided they do not interact with other pets in the home.

Downtown Dogs outings mean so much to our Adoption Center animals. Just ask adoptable Kira! Recently, Kira spent a nice, cool day with volunteer Kathryn exploring the Roanoke College campus before heading home for a movie, cuddles, and a peaceful afternoon nap. Experiences like these give our dogs a much-needed break from shelter life and help them relax and recharge while they wait for families of their own.

Thank you, Kathryn, for giving sweet Kira such a wonderful day!
