To your cat… it’s actually a compliment! Cats groom the ones they trust. It can also be a way to bond, mark you with their scent, or just show a little love (in their own… chaotic way).

If it ever becomes excessive or obsessive, it could be a sign of stress or something medical, so keep an eye on it.

Dogs experience the world through scent in a way we can’t fully imagine. They have up to 300 million scent receptors, compared to about 6 million in humans, which means smells carry much more information for them.

What seems gross to us is often fascinating and informative to them. It’s completely normal behavior, even if it makes us question their choices.

🐾 Meet Mochi — 15 years young, and still reporting for duty.

At Shenandoah Veterinary Associates, we take patient care seriously — our team trains hard, stays prepared, and shows up for every case with everything we've got. But we've also learned that caring for animals all day, especially on the hard days, takes a certain kind of heart. And sometimes, that heart needs a little tending to.

That's where Mochi comes in.

Mochi is a 15-year-old Shih Tzu and the beloved personal pet of our Manager of Clinical Operations, Sara Honeycutt — and she's earned an unofficial (but very important) title here at SVA: team morale specialist. This sweet senior girl knows a thing or two about resilience, and during quieter moments, you might catch a glimpse of her making her rounds — lending a paw, offering a snuggle, and reminding us all why we do what we do. On the days when our best efforts don't bring the outcomes we pray for, Mochi has a way of steadying the team and filling the room with a little warmth when it's needed most.

This morning, while Sara stepped away for a quick errand, Mochi could be found right where any seasoned professional would be — stationed alongside Kelly Dunne, our CSR Team Lead, helping manage phone calls and client check-ins. At 15, she's not just along for the ride. She runs the show.

We work hard here. We care deeply here. And every once in a while, we're lucky enough to have a wise little elder like Mochi remind us that joy belongs here too.

Welcome to SVA, Mochi. We're so glad you're on the team. 🐶❤️

Cats typically need about 3.5–4.5 oz per 5 lbs of body weight daily but many don’t drink enough on their own. Water fountains, wet food, and multiple bowls can help!

If you notice changes in drinking habits, don’t ignore it. Call us: (540) 443-3020.

🐾 Meet Our Friend Lumos — Our V.I.P. (Very Important Patient)! 🐾

Some patients you remember. Some patients you really remember. Lumos? She's earned herself a loyalty punch card we wish she'd stop filling up. 😅

Visit #1 — January 2026: Lumos was actually one of our very first patients when SVA opened our doors. The trouble? She'd helped herself to some leftover rib roast twine. And while we're sure it tasted absolutely gourmet going down, it had zero intention of coming back out on its own. Lumos underwent emergency surgery, recovered like the champ she is, and went home to a very relieved (and very grateful) family. Happy ending! 🎉

Visit #2 — Memorial Day Weekend 2026: Lumos strolled back through our doors not feeling like her usual sparkly self. Good news — no surgery this time! The not-so-good news — she had a truly nasty urinary tract infection that was causing all kinds of internal ruckus. Our team got her treated and sent her home with her owners, with a plan to follow up with her primary veterinarian.

The lucky human chosen as her slumber party buddy? Our wonderful LVT student, Sarah, who kept Lumos company, comfy, and well cared for through the night. 💛 (Sarah, you're the real MVP — though we suspect Lumos would've preferred her own couch.)

Lumos, sweet girl… we love you. We adore you. We are always SO happy to see your face. But also? Please stop visiting us. 💛 (We mean it in the kindest way possible. Emergency medicine is one of the few fields where being a "regular" is not the goal!)

🩺 Here's the real takeaway: Lumos's owners knew the signs. Both times, they didn't wait — they brought her in, trusted us with her care, and chose us again. That trust means the world to our team, and it's exactly why Lumos has two happy endings instead of one.

If your pet seems off — straining to urinate, vomiting, lethargic, refusing food, or just not acting like themselves — don't wait it out. Call us. We'd rather see you for a "just checking" visit than a "we waited too long" emergency.

💧 Is your dog drinking enough water? A good rule of thumb: about 1 oz per pound of body weight daily. But things like heat, activity, and diet can change that! Noticing big changes in thirst? That can be a sign something’s up. Let’s check it out: (540) 443-3020

🐾 Meet Our Friend Carson! 🐾

Carson recently came to see us after getting into some things that definitely weren't on the doggie menu. Thankfully, his owners didn't wait around — they called right away and brought him in fast. After treatment and a night of monitoring with our team, Carson walked out the door on his own four paws… and let's just say he was more than ready to leave. (We get it, Carson. Hospital food isn't for everyone. 😉)

Carson's story has a happy ending, but here's the truth: not every pet is as lucky. When it comes to toxic ingestion, every minute matters — and the quicker you act, the better your pet's chances.

🚨 Pups (and cats!) will eat the most unimaginable things. 🚨
Chocolate, grapes, raisins, xylitol (sugar-free gum!), human medications, rat bait, household plants, cleaning products, ma*****na, batteries… we've seen it all. If it fits in a mouth, somebody's pet has tried it.

Watch for these signs of possible toxicity:
🐶 Vomiting or diarrhea
🐶 Excessive drooling
🐶 Lethargy, weakness, or wobbliness
🐶 Tremors or seizures
🐶 Loss of appetite
🐶 Pale gums
🐶 Difficulty breathing
🐶 Disorientation or unusual behavior
If you suspect your pet has eaten something they shouldn't have — here's what to do:

📞 Call #1: ASPCA Animal Poison Control at (888) 426-4435 (available 24/7/365). Their toxicology experts will help you understand the severity of what was ingested and guide next steps. A consultation fee may apply, but it's worth every penny.

📞 Call #2: Us at (540) 443-3020! Once you've spoken with ASPCA, give us a call and we'll take it from there. Be sure to bring any wrappers, packaging, plant clippings, or labels with you — those details can be the difference between guessing and a targeted, lifesaving treatment plan.

💛 Carson's owners did everything right. When in doubt, don't wait it out. Call. Bring it in. Let us help.

A cat’s nose print is completely unique, much like a human fingerprint. The tiny ridges and patterns on their nose create a one-of-a-kind identifier.

Changes in the appearance or texture of the nose can sometimes reflect hydration or overall health, so it’s always worth paying attention to what’s normal for your cat. Noticing changes? Call us: (540) 443-3020

A dog’s reaction to guests can tell us a lot about their comfort level and behavior. Reactions like barking, hiding, or guarding can be linked to anxiety, lack of socialization, or protective instincts. Understanding those signals can help prevent stress and create safer interactions for everyone.
