🎉Happy 18th birthday to Eileen, our beloved wood turtle! 🐢

Wood turtles are considered Endangered by the IUCN due to population decline and loss of habitat. This species is threatened by deforestation (to collect timber and to build towns), by being run over by vehicles, and by being captured for the illegal pet trade.

Eileen is a rescue animal who cannot be released into the wild because she only has three feet, and is instead given the chance to live a happy and healthy life here at Mill Mountain Zoo.

Did you know? Wood turtles stomp their feet in a special way to mimic rain, which attracts worms 🪱🪱—their favorite food!

If you would like to donate to help Mill Mountain Zoo take care of Eileen and the rest of our Critically Endangered animals, click here: https://www.mmzoo.org/support-us/donations

Mill Mountain Zoo Unveils Breeding Pair of Critically Endangered Primates in Brand-New Exhibit!

Roanoke, Virginia — Mill Mountain Zoo is thrilled to announce the grand opening of its newest exhibit, marking the return of primates to the Zoo! Even more exciting, this is the first time in Mill Mountain Zoo’s history that it will house a breeding pair of critically endangered red ruffed lemurs—one of the most striking and imperiled primates on the planet.

Native to the rainforests of Madagascar, red ruffed lemurs are easily recognized by their vibrant rust-colored coats, expressive golden-green eyes, and unique vocalizations. Their wild populations are critically threatened by deforestation and the illegal pet trade—making their presence at Mill Mountain Zoo both a vital conservation effort and an educational opportunity.

The Zoo’s red ruffed lemurs are two years old and have been thoughtfully paired as a potential breeding duo to support the long-term care and conservation of their species.

“This exhibit is a monumental next chapter for Mill Mountain Zoo,” said Niki Voudren, Executive Director. “By welcoming critically endangered red ruffed lemurs, we are expanding our conservation impact and continuing our mission to connect people with wildlife, while raising awareness about endangered species. These animals are not just ambassadors for their kind—they are a symbol of hope and action.”

The new red ruffed lemur exhibit, now open to the public, is located in the Zoo’s former snow leopard habitat, which has been thoughtfully redesigned to support the needs of a breeding pair of critically endangered primates.

The exhibit was designed in-house by the Zoo’s animal department manager and brought to life by the dedicated animal care and maintenance teams. The habitat has been carefully tailored to support the natural behaviors of these primates. Key features include elevated climbing structures that mimic rainforest canopies and naturalistic landscaping with integrated opportunities for both mental and physical enrichment.

Red ruffed lemurs are one of the largest species of lemur. They use their long tongues to pull nectar from flowers and their fluffy faces to transfer pollen—making them the largest pollinators in the world. Their name comes from the tufts of red fur around their ears. Red ruffed lemurs can live up to 20 years in the wild and up to 30 years in human care. They weigh approximately 9 pounds as adults, and their tails—used for balance in the treetops—can grow up to 2 feet long. These highly social animals live in groups of 2 to 32 individuals and communicate using vocalizations and scent marking.

This exciting addition strengthens the Zoo’s role as a regional leader in conservation, education, and exceptional animal welfare. Guests are invited to visit the new lemurs and learn how they can help protect wildlife around the world.

Mill Mountain Zoo Welcomes Judy the Otter to the Family

Roanoke, Virginia — Mill Mountain Zoo is thrilled to introduce its newest resident: Judy, a lively two-year-old Asian small-clawed otter! Judy joins Porkchop, the Zoo’s beloved 14-year-old male otter, and is already settling into her new habitat.

Asian small-clawed otters are the smallest otter species in the world and are known for their social nature, playful energy, and incredible dexterity. Judy embodies all of that and more —she’s curious, clever, and full of youthful energy. She’s been delighting keepers with her explorations and playful antics since arriving.

“Judy is a wonderful addition to the Mill Mountain Zoo family,” said Niki Voudren, Executive Director. “She brings youth and excitement to Porkchop’s life and plenty of joy and entertainment to our team and our visitors. Our animal care team has been working closely to monitor their introductions and ensure a positive transition, and they are having a blast together.”

Guests can now see Judy and Porkchop together in their specialized habitat, where they can often be spotted splashing in their pool, foraging for rocks and treats, or napping together in cozy spots.

Judy’s arrival highlights Mill Mountain Zoo’s continued commitment to wildlife conservation and education. Asian small-clawed otters are classified as Vulnerable in the wild, primarily due to habitat loss, pollution, and illegal wildlife trade. By welcoming Judy, the Zoo aims to help raise awareness about the challenges facing her species and inspire conservation action.

Come meet Judy on your next visit and discover why these otters are one of the most popular animals at Mill Mountain Zoo!

🐯 Happy International Tiger Day from Mill Mountain Zoo! 🐯

Today is a special day where people around the world celebrate and help protect tigers. It was created in 2010 at the Saint Petersburg Tiger Summit to raise support for tiger conservation and habitat protection.

Millions of tigers once roamed the forests of Asia a century ago—but now fewer than 4,500 tigers remain in the wild because of habitat loss, poaching, and illegal trade. Here in America, many tigers are mistreated in roadside zoos or illegal private collections.

One of those was Ruby, who came to Mill Mountain Zoo in November 1988 after being rescued and lived with us until December 10, 2006, when she sadly passed away. She became a symbol for conservation, and though she is no longer with us, her legacy lives on.

Join us in honoring Ruby and her wild relatives today. By protecting tigers, we also protect the forests they live in and the animals they depend on. Every bit of awareness we can spread makes a difference.

If you would like to assist the Mill Mountain Zoo to continue in helping the conservation efforts we serve, please consider donating at https://www.mmzoo.org/support-us/donations. Thank you.

Our Story

Mill Mountain Zoo is located within Mill Mountain Park, a beautiful 568-acre regional park which is maintained by Roanoke Parks and Recreation. Located at the top of Mill Mountain just off the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway, the zoo overlooks the city of Roanoke and the surrounding mountain vistas The zoo was founded in 1952 and is a 501(c)(3) non-profit operated by the Blue Ridge Zoological Society. Our mission at the Mill Mountain Zoo is to promote an appreciation and understanding of wildlife and habitat preservation through the use of quality exhibits and educational programs, and to work in cooperation with other animal conservation programs. Our facility advances three core beliefs: excellence in the implementation of the highest standards of animal care, conservation management of endangered species and fostering science education through its animal collection. While a recreational attraction, the zoo strives to provide an enjoyable experience for visitors, within the context of an educational organization dedicated to the natural sciences and management of captive animal species.

We are active participants in cooperative conservation programs with other zoos with species such as Snow leopards, Red pandas, and Pallas cats. Our animal collection continues to grow and evolve as our facility moves in a new strategic direction with our Virginia Wild concept. This new direction for the zoo will focus on species that are native to Appalachia and the Blue Ridge Mountains in particular. Highlighted species in the future will include Black bear, Bald eagles, Bobcat, and North American river otters that will join many of the species that are already here at the zoo such as the Great Horned owl, Red foxes, Raccoon, Red wolves, and Cougar. Our goal is to introduce new generations to their native wildlife and educate them that conservation starts right here at home. However, we still plan to continue forward with maintaining Snow leopards and a few other Asian species so that we can educate our patrons about the threats posed to endangered, threatened, and vulnerable species that inhabit mountain ranges far away as well. As a result, we are adding new exhibits and renovating existing structures to expand our animal collection and advance our educational programming while better serving our visitors.

Today, the Mill Mountain Zoo is the only major non-profit wildlife attraction on the entire 469-mile span of Blue Ridge Parkway, and enjoys continued success thanks to the support of the community, philanthropic organizations, and private donors.
