🐾 Swimming Safety for Dogs

A swim day sounds like the perfect summer outing… but water fun can sometimes come with unexpected issues.

Things we commonly see after swimming:

💧 Ear infections
Moisture trapped in the ears (especially in floppy-eared pups) creates the perfect environment for infection.

🌿 Hot spots / skin infections
Wet fur + humidity + licking = irritated skin that can become inflamed quickly.

🦠 Waterborne bacteria & parasites
Not all lakes, ponds, or standing water are clean. Exposure can lead to GI upset, skin infections, or more serious illness.

☀️ Heat exhaustion
Swimming helps cool off, but dogs can still overheat—especially on hot docks, beaches, or during long play sessions.

🐾 Cuts / paw injuries
Rocks, shells, pool edges, and rough surfaces can injure paws.

🦟 Mosquitoes, fleas & ticks
Summer outdoor adventures mean increased exposure—protection matters.

Before summer adventures, make sure your pet is:
✔ Up to date on vaccines
✔ Current on heartworm prevention
✔ Protected against fleas & ticks
✔ Healthy enough for summer activity

☀️ Florida Summer Safety for Pets

Florida summers are no joke — and our pets feel the heat even faster than we do.

A few important reminders as temperatures climb:

🐾 Hot pavement burns paws
If it’s too hot for the back of your hand for 5 seconds, it’s too hot for their paws.

💧 Hydration matters
Always provide fresh water, especially after walks, playtime, or outdoor adventures.

🌡️ Heatstroke can happen quickly
Watch for excessive panting, lethargy, drooling, vomiting, bright red gums, or collapse.

🚗 Never leave pets in the car
Even for “just a minute.” Temperatures rise dangerously fast.

🦟 Mosquitoes, fleas & ticks thrive in summer
Heartworm, flea, and tick prevention should stay consistent year-round in Florida.

🌊 Water safety counts too
Not all dogs are natural swimmers—and pools, lakes, and beaches all carry risks.

At Airport Road Animal Clinic, caring for our patients doesn’t stop when their owners leave for the day. 🤍🐾

This sweet girl, Indie, was boarding with us and decided she wanted to be part of the action instead of hanging out in her suite. So naturally, she spent some time helping our receptionist, Candace, greet visitors and supervise the front desk. 🥹

Moments like these are a reminder that every pet who walks through our doors is treated like family. Whether they’re here for an appointment, surgery, or boarding, we take the time to get to know their personalities, earn their trust, and make them feel safe and loved.

We may be their veterinary team, but we also become their friends.
