They highlight the need for change in the veterinary profession to address the rejected "How To" issues like trigeminal-mediated idiopathic head shaking, sleep-deprived collapsing, and sciatica in sport horses, which can occur in all equine species.

The most important point is that this muscle in its entirety is UNDER THE SPINE!  The only way to palpate it is RE**ALLY and even then a person can only reach a small portion of the muscle due to its extended length!  If you are an owner, bodyworker or physiotherapist, this means that you CANNOT palpate, reach or touch this muscle from the OUTSIDE of the horse!  THIS IS A FACT!  ONLY veterinarians can reach this muscle BY RE**AL PALPATION!  This also means IT IS DEEP and inaccessible to everyone except veterinarians!   So IF you think you can physically touch and have an effect or affect this muscle in any way from the outside of the horse, YOU CANNOT!   Therein lies the biggest problem with Iliopsoas injuries in sport horses!

Why You Should Care for This Horse?

Why should you care for this horse who had severe Sciatica and Headshaking Syndrome clinical signs? Because….
YOUR horse can develop Sciatica and Headshaking clinical signs.

YOUR horse could also develop clinical signs of Shivers, Stringhalt, and Sleep-Deprived and Collapsing!

How is that possible?
ALL horses have two sciatic nerves that can become injured, compressed, and irritated.

ALL horses have two trigeminal nerves that can become injured, compressed, and irritated.

ALL horses have two Iliopsoas muscles that can become injured then swell and compress the Lumbosacral Plexus (ventral nerve roots) creating the clinical signs of Shivers, Stringhalt, or both.

ALL horses can become sleep-deprived and collapsing due to injury throughout their axial (body) skeleton compromising their ability to stand sleeping or becoming too painful to be able to lay down to sleep.
