🐾 We Appreciate Our Veterinary Technicians Every Day🐾

Last week was Veterinary Technician Week and we want to publicly thank our incredible team for the skill, patience, and heart they bring each day to their often behind-the-scenes work.

We celebrated our amazing veterinary technicians all last week because they make a world of difference for the cats, dogs, and pet owners we meet all year long.

At MN SNAP, we perform more than 14,000 spay/neuter surgeries each year. Supporting each of these successful procedures is a team of dedicated staff that make this compassionate, quality care possible.

💙Join us in celebrating our veterinary technicians and all of the MN SNAP staff as we thank them for the work they do that makes a lasting difference for pets, their families, and our communities.

Halloween can be a lot for our pets. Doorbells, masks, eerie sounds, and costumed strangers at the door can turn a fun night into a stressful one. A few simple steps can help:

🎃 Ditch the doorbell. Cover it and use a motion-sensor decoration or a sign to alert you before trick-or-treaters reach the door. Keep pets leashed or crated while you answer.
👻 Skip the costume if they’re not into it. If your pet’s head and tail are down or they’re pawing at the outfit, dressing up isn’t for them. If they don’t mind, try the costume on well before Halloween to check fit and safety.
🔔 Get ready for sights and sounds. Spooky decorations, knocking, and masks can frighten pets. Let them get used to your costume ahead of time, and keep treats handy so scary things lead to something good.
🏠 Plan a safe room. Set up a quiet space with treats, toys, and favorite items, and introduce it before the holiday. Settle your pet in about an hour before trick-or-treaters arrive.
🚗 Try trunk-or-treat. Hand out treats from the end of your driveway or join a community trunk-or-treat so your pets can stay safely at home.

One more timeless tip: make sure your pet’s collar is on and their microchip and contact info are up to date, in case a door opens at the wrong moment.

Happy Halloween from all of us at MN SNAP! 🐾

Can you give us a hand (towel)? 🐾

We’re running low on an everyday item that plays an important role in keeping our patients safe and comfortable: hand towels!

The perfect size for cats, hand towels help keep our furry patients warm and cozy while they are with us.

Have a few gently used hand towels to spare? Willing to pick up a couple of new hand towels the next time you’re at the store? We’d love your help restocking our supply!

The standard size (about 16 x 25 inches) and any color will do. All we ask is, no holes please.

It may seem like a minor way to help, but these small towels make a huge difference for MN SNAP’s quality care of beloved cats. Thank you!

You Supply the Space – MN SNAP Does the Work!

MN SNAP is searching for a business or organization that shares our love of cats and dogs and can host MN SNAP’s 35-foot fully equipped mobile surgical unit on a recurring basis in the East Twin Cities metro.

We provide low-cost spay and neuter surgeries for cats and dogs belonging to Minnesota qualifying pet owners, rescue organizations, and animal shelters. The mobile unit makes it possible to bring our services to communities across the metro … but we need somewhere to park!

Where are we looking for a partner? Ideally, our new partner would be in Saint Paul, though we will consider other locations within 20 miles north or south of the Twin Cities.

What happens on clinic days? Throughout the day, patients are cared for by MN SNAP’s highly qualified, licensed veterinarian and clinic staff using the most current equipment and techniques. All animals are discharged to their owners or rescues/shelters the same day.

What do we need from you on clinic days?
✅A solid, level place to park the mobile unit
✅A source for water and power
✅A conference-room sized, animal-friendly indoor space adjacent or close to the parking lot
✅Parking space for 30-40 pet owners to drop off and pick up their pets throughout the day
✅And a few other requirements, which we can discuss further if you are interested!

If your business or organization is willing to host MN SNAP's mobile unit to provide spay/neuter clinics as a service to the community, please contact [email protected], 612-720-8236 for more information or to discuss your space.

MN SNAP staff and volunteers love hearing pet owners gush about how special their furry family members are—mostly because we couldn’t agree more 🐾

Every cat and dog that comes through our doors is uniquely lovable and deserves the very best veterinary care for a long, healthy future. The pets we have the privilege of meeting come in all shapes and sizes, each with their own personality, quirks, and sometimes very rare genetics!

Such is the case when we recently met this cutie, a male calico cat. 🐱

Only 1 in every 3,000 calico cats are male. Why? The gene responsible for orange/non-orange coloring is carried on the X chromosome, so only with the abnormality of an extra X chromosome, XXY, will you find a male calico cat.

We couldn’t resist sharing this beautiful, rare sight with you. But rest assured, no matter the breed or color of coat, at MN SNAP every pet we care for is treated like one in a million.

Thank you to the Pennington County Humane Society for hosting us in Thief River Falls last week. We're grateful for your warm welcome, your hard work behind the scenes, and your commitment to the pets and families of your community. We'll see you next year! 🚐

How do you provide quality, accessible veterinary care for over 14,000 cats and dogs in a year? It takes a community committed to preventing overpopulation and improving pet health—MN SNAP’s community of partners, expert staff, generous donors, and dedicated volunteers… like Sue!

Sue creates a welcoming experience for people and their pets from the moment they arrive at the MN SNAP clinic. Whether offering a reassuring smile at check-in or lending a helping hand with whatever needs to be done, Sue makes a difference every time she volunteers.

Sue shares that she became familiar with MN SNAP 18 years ago: “I was as impressed with the [MN SNAP] operation then as I am now. The staff and volunteers are pleasant and knowledgeable, and I've always trusted that every animal I brought in would be well taken care of."

A strong passion for helping animals means that Sue shares her talents with a handful of other nonprofits as well, including This Old Horse in Hastings. Five cats and one dog make up Sue’s furry family. Her Golden Retriever/Cocker Spaniel mix Sally, rescued through RAGOM after retiring from breeding, has a favorite toy she loves to carry around like a puppy… a plastic squeaky cow toy, of course 🐄

Thank you, Sue, for all you do at MN SNAP and for all you do to help Minnesota animals!

Feeling inspired by Sue? MN SNAP is looking for additional check-in volunteers that help keep everything running smoothly at our facility in Minneapolis. Contact [email protected] or visit https://mnsnap.org/volunteering/ to learn more.

Across the country and around the world, August 26 is a day dedicated to dogs 🐶

It’s a day to celebrate dogs, recognize the good they do in our communities and the love they bring to our homes, and raise awareness around issues that impact our furry companions.

Looking for ways to participate in National Dog Day this year?

• Find a local opportunity—look for NDD social gatherings or educational events—to attend and meet fellow dog lovers.
• Contribute your time at an animal rescue or shelter this month.
• Share the mission of community organizations doing good for dogs with your social networks.

This National Dog Day, consider buying your pup a little treat 🦴 and then helping MN SNAP spread the word!

MN SNAP provides accessible spay and neuter services and other vital veterinary care for dogs (and cats) to end suffering from overpopulation and to help pets live longer, healthier lives. https://mnsnap.org/why-spay-neuter/

Creating a will, or estate planning more broadly, is sometimes misunderstood as something only those with significant wealth should do. The truth is, anyone can create a lasting legacy by specifying how you want your assets to be distributed both during your life and after your passing.

If you’d like your legacy to reflect making an impact on animal welfare, consider including MN SNAP in your estate planning—an investment in prevention that stops overpopulation.

A legacy gift—no matter the size—is a powerful way to extend your generosity beyond your lifetime and extend your support of Minnesota’s cats and dogs.

All summer, MN SNAP’s mobile clinic is on the road visiting communities where accessible veterinary care can be hard to find. As the Pennington County Humane Society, serving Thief River Falls and the surrounding area, explains:

“Our rural region has limited access to veterinary care, VERY lengthy wait times, and a community of pet owners who deeply love their animals but often lack financial means or transportation for routine and preventative care. For many families here, affordable spay/neuter options are difficult to find without programs like MN SNAP.”

After our recent visit, the team at the Humane Society expressed appreciation and shared:

“MN SNAP’s work means fewer litters surrendered; families able to care for their pets without overwhelming financial strain; healthier, longer lives for animals; and less pressure on the limited resources in Minnesota’s rural regions.”

MN SNAP thanks you—every generous donor, committed volunteer, dedicated staff member, and invaluable community partner like the Pennington County Humane Society—for making this impact possible!
