DAR Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of abused animals in MX donors. and Canada to be adopted.

Defenders of Animals at Risk (DAR) Foundation is a 100% volunteer ran non-profit dedicated to protecting and improving the lives of abused, abandoned, mistreated, and neglected animals in Mexico. We are the U.S.-based sister organization of Fundación DAR, a cat and dog shelter located in Tequisquiapan, Querétaro, Mexico. DAR Foundation helps raise awareness about the plight of neglected animals in Mexico, while also providing funding from U.S. All donations collected through us go to Fundación DAR to keep their shelter of 50+ animals running. It also helps cover abused animal’s medical costs, animal welfare education efforts, low-cost vaccination and sterilization clinics for the public, and covers the cost of flying dogs to the U.S.

🎃🐾 HALLOWEEN & DÍA DE MU***OS: FOOD DANGERS FOR PETS🕸️👻

Candy bowls, trick-or-treat bags, and ofrendas can hide dangerous foods. Keep these hazards away from your furry friends!

🍫 1. CHOCOLATE, SWEETS & BAKED GOODS
Chocolate is toxic to pets. Candy wrappers and lollipop sticks can cause choking or intestinal blockages. Baked goods may contain chocolate or raisins.

⚠️ 2. SUGAR-FREE TREATS
Some sugar-free candy and gum contain xylitol, which can cause life-threatening poisoning in dogs.

🍇 3. GRAPES, RAISINS & NUTS
Grapes and raisins can cause kidney failure in dogs. Macadamia nuts are also toxic to dogs.

🍖 4. OFRENDA FOODS & LEFTOVERS
Foods may contain onion or garlic, which are toxic to dogs and cats. Cooked bones can cause serious injuries, and fatty leftovers may trigger pancreatitis.

🍷 5. ALCOHOL & OTHER HIDDEN DANGERS
Keep alcohol, coffee, and raw yeast dough away from pets. They can cause serious health problems.

❤️ Store candy securely and keep ofrendas, food, and drinks out of pets' reach.

🚨 If your pet eats something potentially toxic, contact a veterinarian immediately. Don't wait for symptoms!

🕯️🐾 DÍA DE MU***OS – IN MEMORY OF THE ANIMALS WE LOST 🌼💖

October 27 is a special day in some Mexican traditions to remember and welcome the souls of the pets who have crossed the rainbow bridge. 🌈🐾

Today, we remember the animals who touched our lives with their love, loyalty, and unconditional affection. Some shared our homes, some were rescued and cared for in shelters, and others never had the chance to experience the loving family they deserved. 💖

Every animal has a story, and every life matters. ❤️

Even when their paws no longer walk beside us, their memories remain forever in our hearts. Today, we honor those we have lost and celebrate the love they left behind. 🕊️🐶🐱

🐾 Paws & Facts: Wait... dogs get hiccups too?! Yes! 😄

If you've ever seen your dog suddenly start making rhythmic little "hic" sounds, sitting there looking mildly confused about it — that's a hiccup, and it's completely normal.

Hiccups happen when the diaphragm — the muscle that helps control breathing — spasms involuntarily. In dogs, this is usually triggered by eating or drinking too fast, excitement, stress, or simply swallowing too much air during play. Puppies tend to get hiccups more often than adult dogs, likely because of their energetic, gulp-first-think-later approach to life.

The good news is that hiccups are almost always harmless and resolve on their own within a few minutes. Letting your dog relax, offering a small sip of water, or simply waiting it out usually does the trick.

So next time your pup starts hiccuping mid-nap, just enjoy the moment — it's one of the more relatable things about them. 😄

🐾 PAWS & FACTS: THE POWER OF THE NOSE!

Did you know your dog’s nose can do much more than sniff out treats? 🐶❤️
Here are 5 fascinating facts about your dog’s incredible sense of smell!

🐾1. A SUPERPOWERFUL SENSE OF SMELL
Dogs have around 300 million scent receptors, compared with about 6 million in humans!

🐾2. THEY CAN SNIFF OUT HEALTH CHANGES
Some specially trained dogs can detect scent changes associated with certain medical conditions, including changes linked to blood sugar levels.

🐾3. THEY CAN SNIFF WHILE BREATHING
A dog’s nose is designed to let air move in and out while helping scents remain available for detection.

🐾4. A WET NOSE HAS A PURPOSE
Moisture helps trap scent particles, making them easier for dogs to detect.

🐾5. THEY HAVE A SECOND SCENT-DETECTING SYSTEM
A special organ called the vomeronasal organ helps dogs detect chemical signals, including pheromones.

SHE WATCHED HER SIBLINGS GO HOME 💔

Kari arrived at Fundación DAR in November 2023, just three months old. One by one, her siblings were adopted and went home. Kari was left behind. 💔

She grew up in the shelter without them and without a family of her own. Now, it's her turn to discover what it feels like to be loved. ❤️

🐾 Paws & Facts: Somehow there's a dog-shaped lump in your bed. 🛏️

You pull back the covers at night and there they are — burrowed all the way down, only a nose or a paw sticking out. How did they even get under there so fast? 🐶

This cozy habit connects back to a dog's natural denning instinct. Wild canines sought out small, enclosed spaces like burrows for safety, warmth, and a sense of security. Being tucked under a blanket taps into that same ancient comfort — dark, warm, and protected on all sides.

There's also a simpler explanation: it's warm, it's soft, and it smells like you. For a lot of dogs, that combination is basically irresistible. Breeds with thinner coats especially love the extra warmth, but plenty of dogs just do it because it feels safe. ❤️

So if you're sharing your blanket with a furry burrito most nights, know that it's less about being spoiled and more about ancient instinct meeting modern comfort. 💕

EVA DESERVES SO MUCH MORE ❤️

🐾 Eva was found injured when she was just a tiny puppy. She was so sick that she almost didn’t survive, but this little girl fought hard and made it through.

She was brought to our shelter for the medical care she needed. Sadly, what was meant to be a safe place became the place where she grew up.

Eva is now a wonderful girl with so much love to give. She enjoys the company of people and other dogs and has a playful, affectionate nature.

But Eva is a black dog, and sadly, black dogs are often overlooked by adopters. More than three years have passed, and she is still waiting for someone to see how special she is.

A shelter should never be the only home a dog knows. Eva deserves a family, a cozy bed, adventures, cuddles, and someone who will love her for the rest of her life. ❤️

🐾 Paws & Facts: The stare. You know the one. 👀

You sit down with your plate, and suddenly your dog materializes right beside you, eyes locked on every bite, not blinking, not moving, just... waiting. 🐶

This behavior comes from a mix of instinct and learned experience. In the wild, pack members would watch each other eat closely — it's simply part of how dogs are wired socially. But most house dogs have also learned something very specific: sometimes, if they stare long enough, a piece of chicken magically appears.

Even if you've never intentionally fed your dog from the table, a single dropped crumb or one moment of "just this once" is enough to teach them that staring works. Dogs are excellent at reading patterns, and mealtime is one they never forget.

The good news? Consistency breaks the habit fast. Ignore the stare, and most dogs eventually give up and go nap somewhere less exciting. 😄

❤️🐾 PECAS HAS FOUND HER FAMILY! 🐾❤️

Some stories remind us that a dog's life can change in just a few days.

Pecas was abandoned inside a taxi. Thankfully, the driver didn't leave her behind. He brought her to DAR Foundation, giving this little girl a chance at a better life.
And Pecas was lucky enough to find a family quickly! 🏡❤️

Today, we celebrate her happy ending and the beginning of a new chapter filled with love, safety, and the chance to finally call somewhere home. 🥹🐾

But while we celebrate Pecas, we must remember all the dogs who are still waiting.
At DAR Foundation, so many dogs have been waiting for years to be adopted. Some have spent several years in our shelter. Some have grown up here and have never known what it feels like to have a family, a bed of their own, and a place to truly call home. 💔
Every adoption fills our hearts with joy, but it also reminds us how many lives are still waiting to change.

🐾 Pecas got her chance. Now we want so many more dogs to get theirs.
