1. We hate to burst your bubble but, as most TNR programs, Why? If done properly, acclimating feral cats to a new area is a huge commitment for the new caretaker. Itโs stressful for both the caretaker and for the cats. And, even if done properly, thereโs still a risk the good-intentioned project will not be successful. ๐ฟ But the main reason? We donโt have people with appropriate properties who volunteer to do this. People think we have hundreds of barn homes ready and waiting. Sadly, we do not. News flash - no one wants feral cats. They have nowhere to go. ๐ They have chosen their territory and that is where they are comfortable.
2. ๐ง๐ต๐ฒ ๐๐ฎ๐ฐ๐๐๐บ ๐ฒ๐ณ๐ณ๐ฒ๐ฐ๐. Cats make their way to a particular location because they have found a food source. ๐๐โโฌ If the cats are removed, it is only a matter of time before new cats move in. So you've accomplished nothing by removing the original cats. If you arenโt feeding, you need to find the person who is. If the food source is gone, the cats will move along to the next one. If you are the one who has chosen to feed, you need to make every attempt to have the cats sterilized, not removed. That way you can continue to feed without breeding and all the challenges that go along with those behaviors.
3. Releasing feral cats away from their original location is ๐ถ๐น๐น๐ฒ๐ด๐ฎ๐น. Itโs considered animal abandonment and cruelty, as they can't survive in unknown environments, often leading to starvation, injury, or death, and they may carry diseases. TNR is the most humane course of action for feral cats. It reduces much of the nuisance behaviors and greatly improves their life expectancy.
For the reasons stated above,
TNR is trap neuter RETURN, โ
not trap neuter RELOCATE.
