Remember the kitten, April, we posted last week? This is her handsome (and unique) brother Captain. Captain is a male tortoiseshell kitten, and if you know anything about cats, you know how rare this combination is!

The tortoiseshell pattern is found only when two X chromosomes are present. Since female cats have XX chromosomes and male cats have XY chromosomes, almost all tortoiseshell cats are female. In fact, it is estimated that only 1 in 3,000 tortoiseshell cats are male (roughly 99.9% are female)! This rare coloring on a male cat is due to a genetic mutation that causes the male cat to have XXY chromosomes, allowing them to produce both black and orange coloring in their fur!

Captain and his sister April were the sweetest kittens during their visit, and we can't wait to see them again!

We love summer fun as much as everyone else, but we also want to keep your pet's health and safety in mind! With the heat ramping up it is important to know how to avoid emergencies like heatstroke, as well as what to do if you think your pet is experiencing heatstroke. Check out the information below, and when in doubt consult your veterinarian!

P.S. Also keep an eye out for hot surfaces like sidewalks or asphalt that may cause burns to the paw pads of your furry friends! When on walks or spending time outside, try to make sure your pup has a grassy or other cooler surface to walk on to try to prevent these burns!

As the weather heats up and we all start enjoying some fun at the lake, please keep your pet's safety in mind! Blue-green algae is an organism that are commonly found in bodies of water like lakes, and they produce toxins that are extremely harmful to our pets. Before taking your pets to the lake this summer, check the link below that has great information on current algal blooms in lakes across Kansas!

Did you know that more pets are reported lost on the 4th of July than on any other day of the year? We love celebrating the holiday just as much as everyone else, but we love keeping your pets safe even more! Here are some tips for keeping your pets happy and healthy during the holiday:
1. Take your pup out for a walk or play session earlier in the day to help them burn off some energy before the evening fireworks.
2. Keep collars with identifying information on all pets. Additionally, getting pets microchipped and making sure all microchips are registered with up-to-date information is helpful for recovering lost pets!
3. When taking your pet outside, always keep them on a leash. Even the most well-trained dogs may get spooked by the loud noises and run away to protect themselves!
4. Make sure all food and alcohol are kept out of your pet's reach to avoid any emergency vet visits. Additionally, make sure all pets have plenty of water to help them stay cool during the hot weather.
5. Keep all pets inside during the evening as much as possible. Provide a safe area in the house and ambient noise/calm music to help them to relax.
6. If your pet has a history of noise aversion, call your primary care vet with plenty of time to spare! They will likely be able to recommend medications and other options to help keep your pet calm as long as they have seen your pet within the past year.

With these tips we hope you AND your pets can enjoy the holiday!
