Beau braved his first farmers market

He had a couple barking incidents, but he was quick to engage when prompted. He ended up getting so tired he took a couple naps.

Yesterday evening Beau and I went to the Wednesday art walk!

He did great. We didn’t really work on obedience, though he was very willing too. We worked on exposure, engagement and some light reactivity. He’s not reactive enough to label him as such for me, but he’s interested in saying hi to people and staring at dogs. So we worked on not greeting others and playing with me.

Why I don’t like to have owners visit their dogs during a board

I get asked if owners can visit their dog while I have them for a board and train and I always recommend against it.
One reason being it can throw the dog off, but the main reason may surprise you.

It makes me look bad 🤷🏼‍♀️
Instead of seeing a big before and after you’re seeing the middle ground and it’s sloppy. Foundations are still being placed, skills aren’t solid and proofed some aren’t even introduced yet. Every owner is gonna have expectations of me and the progress they see even if they don’t know it. If I let people see the middle ground then I have to explain the whole time that this ISNT the finished product. We are still training and working. I may still be relying heavily on food lures and rewarding throughout a stay and then the owner gets worried they have to lure and reward the whole time when that’s just the process. It’s not done yet!

Even with clients who do private sessions I have to stand there and explain we have to start at ground 0 and work our way up. We never start at the end result. It’s not common sense to your dog, I have to teach everything and in increments at their pace. Looking at a half done or barely started project doesn’t earn trust.

With the Warrensburg Farmers' Market season started and having a booth on Saturdays more and more people are becoming aware of our existence. I answer a lot of questions so let me answer some here!

✨Farmer’s Market Booth: Everything I sell at the market is handmade and I reinforce the ties with superglue. I don’t make ANY personal money off of the market. All income and donations goes towards my placement dogs. Which right now means Placement Guy. When you buy something you’re helping me train and maintain him.

✨Where do you get your dogs: I’m on my second placement dog and I got him from a SC rescue. My last placement dog was donated to me.

✨How can I help: Donating monetary or perusing our Amazon wish list! Linktree is in my bio.

✨What do you train for: I specialize in mobility and psychiatric service dogs, but I want to train medical alerts as well. As for pet dogs I specialize in reactivity and bite risk dogs. If you’re interested in obedience I tend to recommend out to The Warrensburg Dog Nerd

A while ago Void’s owner told me Void developed interest in squirrels. Something that neither of us had seen in her before. We kept an eye on it and then it quickly became dangerous when Void tried to chase a squirrel and nearly yanked her owner out of her wheelchair.

Void practically had no prey drive when I placed her and her owner said it was a recent thing. So we started sessions on stopping this dangerous behavior. It’s ok to look, we just don’t want her trying to chase and potentially really injuring herself and her owner.
This is why her owner chose to have her on a prong even though we both know Void generally doesn’t need it. It’s because no matter what Void is a dog first.

Service dogs are highly trained and worth thousands. But people get caught up in that thought and forget they are dogs first. They are animals. Animals who are strong and have instincts and drives. Void went from lunging to fixating to offering engagement and disengaging from the squirrels.

Throwback to muzzle training with B&T Butch. He was a bite risk and when he went home he was reliably muzzle trained, worked on heeling, recall, grooming, touching, place and various foundations.

The problems with free feeding

Lately I’ve had multiple clients tell me they free feed and they don’t know the harms free feeding can come with.
Free feeding is when food is left out pretty much 24/7 for your animal and they eat when they want. So what’s the problem?

•creates or encourages resource guarding.

•dogs rarely do well with having 24/7 access to
food. They either eat too much or never eat.

•food can go bad. Dog food bags are designed to keep food fresh, when food is left out they dry out and become not as good for the dog to eat so they may avoid it.

•makes it hard to relay information to your vet about their diet, when they ate, etc in case of emergency.

•ruins food drive because why work when there’s food always there which makes training harder.

Put your dogs on a schedule so you can keep track of how much they eat and when. Helps with weight management, limits dog fights and resource guarding, makes food valuable so training is easier, etc.
