A fun place for your canine family member to run and play! Located east of the observation tower on John Barkley Drive, the 53-acre off-leash area features a dog swim area along with wood chip and natural surface trails through grassland and wooded areas. The area is open year-round

during regular park hours except EVERY Tuesday and Thursday from 5:00 am to 9:00 am, when the off leash area will be closed for routine maintenance. During maintenance closures (EVERY Tuesday and Thursday from 5:00 am to 9:00 am) , our intention is to conduct a higher level of maintenance to the area without compromising dog and patron safety. To view the location of the off-leash area in the park please see the Shawnee Mission Park Map. For the enjoyment of all patrons and pets all JCPRD Dog Off-Leash Area Code of Conduct/Rules apply. JCPRD has a total of four dog off-leash areas. Our off-leash areas are located in Heritage Park, Thomas S. Stoll Memorial Park and Kill Creek Streamway Park (at the 95th Street access point). Each off-leash area offers an enclosed, fenced area.

Our parks started their spring/summer hours today. Many of our parks will be open from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. through Oct. 31. Antioch Park has different opening hours depending on if you are walking or driving into the park. In addition, we have several parks who have year-round dawn-to-dusk hours.

Reminder: The road in Shawnee Mission Park starting by the marina parking lot and extending to the parking lot by Shelter 8 is currently closed. In addition, the paved trail is closed in this same area. These closures are tied to improvements being made near Shelter 6 as part of a long-term investment to improve accessibility, pedestrian safety, and connections to nearby park amenities.

To get to the off-leash area from the Renner Road entrance, you will need to turn left when entering the park and follow the green arrows you can see on the attached map to go around on Barkley Drive.

To get to the Gary L. Haller Trail from Shawnee Mission Park, you will need to take Barkley Drive on the south end of the park and go to the parking lot for the Gary L. Haller Trail across from the parking lot for Shelter 8. You can get on the paved trail from here and it will connect to the Gary L. Haller Trail in Mill Creek Streamway Park where you can go north or south.

🚧 Heads up, park visitors! 🚧

Improvements at Shawnee Mission Park begin Tuesday, Jan. 27 near Shelters 6 and 12 at Shawnee Mission Park and will require road and trail closures in the project areas through June 2026.

These improvements are part of a long-term investment to improve accessibility, pedestrian safety, and connections to nearby park amenities.

Tomahawk Hills and Heritage Park golf courses will be open during regular hours, weather permitting.
Ernie Miller Nature Center is closed to drop-in visitors until mid-2026. The park is open dawn to dusk.
