Our Animal Control Officers have recently seen an increase in raccoons showing signs consistent with canine distemper. Distemper is a viral disease that commonly affects wildlife such as raccoons, skunks, and foxes.

Raccoons with distemper may appear disoriented, lethargic, or unusually tame. They may stumble, circle, or remain active during the day.

The best way to protect wildlife, pets, and our community is to leave wildlife alone and never feed wild animals. Feeding wildlife can increase contact between animals and contribute to the spread of disease.

If you see a raccoon that appears sick or behaving abnormally in Lenexa, please do not approach it. Instead, contact our dispatch center at 913-477-7301 so an Animal Control Officer can respond and investigate.

This is also a good reminder to make sure your pets’ vaccinations are up to date, including the distemper vaccine.

Made a temporary Pup O Potty for the kids and it’s legit 10 degrees warmer in there. Not a great solution for the big ones but we had a cold weiner and we can’t have that! ❤️

Pet Safety Reminder ❄️🐾

This isn’t just a little chilly—temperatures and wind chills are expected to drop into the negative digits this weekend, which can be life-threatening for pets. Limit time outdoors, provide warm, dry shelter with fresh (unfrozen) water, and bring pets inside whenever possible.

If it’s too cold for you, it’s too cold for them. 🐾

More pet collars that once adorned the Rainbow Bridge in Lake Lure were found today!!!

Contractors working to restore the Lake Lure boat marina made the discovery.

The find comes just days before the one year mark since Hurricane Helene caused widespread damage including the destruction of the beloved Rainbow Bridge.

The timing is so symbolic of the hope, strength and love that no storm could ever take away. The collars will be hung on the replacement bridge that’s set to be built in the spring.

For those who are unaware, the Rainbow Bridge is a metaphor. Pets who have died cross the rainbow bridge to get to Heaven. Pet owners placed the collars on the bridge as a remembrance. Finding the collars is symbolic of the reconnection with their owners and a reminder of the forever love of their fur baby. The collars are treasured mementos.

After a two-month search, a legally blind Chicago man is going to be reunited with his emotional support dog, named Bam Bam, who was stolen from his Logan Square backyard in June.

Bam Bam was located and is currently at the Chicago Police Department, where his owner is headed to bring him home.
