⚠️ Sweet Treat for Humans... Dangerous Toxin for Pets! ⚠️

Did you know that xylitol (sometimes listed as "birch sugar") can be extremely toxic to dogs?

This artificial sweetener is commonly found in: Sugar-free gum , Sugar-free candy, Some peanut butters ,Toothpaste and mouthwash, Baked goods ,Vitamins and supplements

Even a small amount can cause a rapid drop in blood sugar, leading to: Vomiting, Weakness , Loss of coordination , Seizures, and Liver failure

If you suspect your dog has eaten something containing xylitol, don't wait for symptoms to appear. Contact your veterinarian or an emergency veterinary hospital immediately.

A quick reminder: Always check ingredient labels before sharing human foods with your pets, and keep sugar-free products safely out of reach.

Have questions about a product your pet may have gotten into? Give us a call, we're happy to help! 🐾

Meet Harlow! ❤️

To most people, Harlow looks like an ordinary dog living his best life. But this sweet boy has a serious autoimmune disease called Immune-Mediated Thrombocytopenia (IMT), a condition where the body's immune system attacks and destroys its own platelets. Without enough platelets, patients can develop bruising, bleeding, and other potentially life-threatening complications.

One of our amazing groomers was actually the first to notice bruising on Harlow's gums and immediately brought it to our doctors' attention. That observation helped us identify a problem that could have easily been missed.

What's remarkable is that we've known Harlow since he was a puppy, and he didn't show signs of this disease until later in life. It's a reminder that even pets who seem perfectly healthy can develop medical conditions as they age.

Because IMT is an immune-mediated disorder, Harlow's medical care requires special considerations. Certain vaccines may not be recommended for patients like him, and every healthcare decision must be carefully tailored to his individual needs.

We have several patients living with immune-mediated diseases, and while these conditions can be challenging, many go on to live happy, fulfilling lives with proper monitoring and treatment.

And if you've ever met Harlow, you know that despite everything he faces, he's still one of the sweetest, happiest, bestest boys around. 🐾❤️

A special shoutout to our grooming team for helping us catch important health concerns. Sometimes the smallest observation can make the biggest difference.

🌭 **THE GREAT HOT DOG DEBATE (And a quick friendly reminder from Lovell Animal Hospital!)** 🌭

Alright, Lovell family, summer is in full swing, the grills are fired up, and we need to settle a major backyard debate once and for all.

When it comes to the ultimate grilled hot dog, how do you cook it to perfection? Cast your vote below!👇
9)The Anikan Skywalker: This dog has clearly crossed to the "Dark side."
8)The "Charcoal Char": Burnt to a crisp, black lines, maximum crunch.
7) Mild Char: A little burnt....a little integrity left
6) Blistered but Beautiful": This dog has seen the heat, and it's blistered exterior tells the tale
5) Goldie Locks Zone: Not too hot, not too cold- just right
4)The "Perfect Plump": Just enough heat to warm it through and get a slight grill mark but keeping it juicy.
3)The Quick Sear: You set it on the grill long enough to prove it was there
2) Hot Dog Grime Machine: Who are you kidding? That dog was boiled
1) Refrigerator Raw: Look, we're not proud, but sometimes at 3am we get desperate

Drop your vote in the comments and defend your choice!

⚠️ **A Quick Paws-and-Reflect Note from Our Doctors:**

While you’re enjoying those backyard barbecues, please remember to keep the hot dogs strictly on the human plates! 🐾

It’s incredibly tempting to toss a leftover dog or a scrap of bratwurst to your furry best friend, but high-fat foods can cause some serious trouble for pets.

* **The Danger Zone:** Foods high in fat and sodium (like hot dogs, bacon, and burger scraps) can trigger a sudden, painful, and dangerous condition called **pancreatitis** (inflammation of the pancreas). It often requires emergency veterinary care.
* **Hidden Culprits:** Many grilled foods are also seasoned with garlic or onion powder, both of which are toxic to dogs and cats.

**What to do instead?** If your pet is begging for a grill-out treat, stick to safe, unseasoned options like a crunchy baby carrot, a slice of cucumber, or a couple of green beans!

Have fun, stay safe, and let’s see those polling votes! 👇

🐾 **Big Day for Biscuit IV!** 🐾

From nervous to purring in no time flat! Today, Biscuit IV braved their very first visit to Lovell Animal Hospital to see Dr. McEnroe.

To be honest, things started out a little apprehensive—there may have been some wide eyes and a cautious retreat to the back of the carrier. 😿 But Dr. McEnroe and the team know exactly how to handle a skeptical kitten. Enter: the secret weapon. 🤫🍗

After a few incredibly yummy treats, Biscuit decided that maybe the vet’s office isn't so bad after all. By the end of the checkup, this brave little ball of fluff felt right at home!

Thank you, Dr. McEnroe, for making Biscuit’s first official milestone a sweet success!

Guinness is reminding us that age is just a number!

At 13.5 years old, Guinness had started slowing down in ways that were heartbreaking for her family to watch. She was in so much pain from her hips that she wouldn’t even lay comfortably in her bed anymore. Instead, she would pace around, struggle to get comfortable, and her back legs would wobble just trying to stand.
After starting Adequan injections along with Librela for pain management, her family says they are now seeing a side of Guinness they haven’t seen in YEARS ...playful, happy, and full of life again!!

“She hasn’t been this playful in maybe 4-5 years.”

Stories like this are exactly why we love helping senior pets. While we can’t stop aging, we CAN help improve comfort, mobility, and quality of life so our older babies can continue enjoying the things they love most.
Thank you to Guinness’ family for allowing us to share her journey. Seeing sweet seniors get their spark back is one of the best parts of what we do.

If your senior pet is slowing down, struggling to get comfortable, having trouble getting up, pacing, limping, or not acting like themselves anymore, give us a call!!!
There may be options to help.

Happy National Rescue Dog Day from all of us at Lovell Animal Hospital 🐾
Today we celebrate the dogs who got a second chance… and the people and rescues who made that chance possible. Rescue dogs may come with a past, but they also come with endless love, loyalty, and gratitude. Whether they were found abandoned, surrendered, neglected, or simply overlooked, these amazing pups remind us every day that healing and hope are real.
A huge shoutout to some incredible local rescues making a difference right here in East Tennessee:

Why did the chicken cross the road?

To get to Lovell Animal Hospital, obviously. 🐔

Word on the street is we offer treats, belly rubs, grooming, boarding, wellness care, nail trims, dental cleanings, surgeries, and a staff that talks to animals more than actual people some days.
Honestly… we get it, little chicken. We’d cross the road too. 😂

We’re always welcoming new feline and canine patients and would love to meet your furry family members!
