As some of you have probably already noticed, this year has been especially bad for ticks. We have seen a large increase in tick borne diseases in this area. We have seen several more cases in the clinic. We cannot stress enough how important it is to keep your pets on good flea/tick prevention such as Nexgard, Nexgard Plus, Bravecto and Revolution Plus.

***Diseases such as Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, Ehrlichiosis, etc. can be spread to humans from the same ticks biting our pets. We have been vaccinating our canine patients for lyme disease for several years here so a lot of your pets already have extra protection on board.

Clinical signs include: lethargy, fever, shifting leg lameness, joint pain/swelling, inappetence.

Personal story:

Dr. Caldwell’s dog, Patty Cake, has been seriously ill from Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. Ticks are bad this year, and despite Patty Cake being on tick prevention, a tick latched on long enough to transmit the disease. We can’t emphasize prescription Isoxazoline flea and tick prevention enough (ie Nexgard, Bravecto, Simparica, etc), but you may also want to add an additional layer of protection with a repellent like Vectra 3D if you and your dog spends time in the outdoors like Dr. Caldwell. Most tick borne diseases are also zoonotic (contagious to humans too). Apply permethrin or deet (products like Sawyer or Off) to keep the humans protected too.
