🚨Important Update🚨

Stray Open Intake will be closed this Sunday April 27, from 12pm to 2pm. Unfortunately, due to critical capacity and an increase of animals coming in from our enforcement team this week, BARC must cancel Sunday’s open intake.

While we will be closed for intake, 𝘄𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗱𝗼𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴—and we need our community’s help more than ever. This National Volunteer Week, we’re thrilled to celebrate one of the most passionate and positive people we get to work alongside: Lidia Melendez from our partner Houston Pets Alive 💜

Earlier this week, Lidia was honored at the City of Houston Mayor’s Volunteer Appreciation Award ceremony with the Community Partner Volunteer Recognition Award for her incredible work on the Adopt Together program at BARC.

Since the program began, more than 1,000 additional adoptions have taken place thanks to the efforts of Houston Pets Alive and volunteers like Lidia, who bring energy, heart, and a true belief in second chances to everything they do. Her contagious optimism reminds us why this work matters!

The one-year-old husky mix with one blue and one yellow eye! 😍 He's absolutely stunning and has the sweetest personality. Great with kids and well-mannered, Aussie is a perfect family dog. This week is National Animal Care and Control Appreciation Week, and we want to take a moment to recognize two teams at BARC who often do the toughest work behind the scenes: our Animal Enforcement Officers (AEOs) and our Animal Care team.

Our AEOs are the ones answering calls from the public, responding to concerns, and bringing animals in from often heartbreaking or dangerous situations. Once they arrive at BARC, our Animal Care team steps in — making sure every pet is fed, cleaned, monitored, and given the comfort and attention they need.

These teams show up every single day (rain, shine, hurricanes, or even snowstorms) often working through emergencies and natural disasters to ensure animals aren’t left behind.

This work is not easy. It’s physically and emotionally demanding, and it’s often thankless. But our teams continue to show up with compassion, professionalism, and an unwavering commitment to Houston’s animals.

To the individuals who do this work every day: thank you. We see you, we appreciate you, and so do the animals. 💜

Our Upper Respiratory (URI) Room is completely full—with 39 dogs currently being treated, many of them small puppies with more fragile immune systems. We urgently need fosters and adopters to help get them into safe, quiet homes where they can recover. 🐶

💜 FOSTERS NEEDED – We'll provide all the medication and support, and there's no cost to foster.
💜 ADOPTIONS OPEN – All dogs in the URI room are just $5 and the adoption fee includes their treatment medication at no additional cost. They're PURRFURRED and ready for a home.

Our priority is the health of the entire shelter population. We need to make space in the URI room for other dogs beginning to show symptoms so they can quickly start treatment. If we can’t move dogs out, we may face incredibly difficult decisions no one wants to make. Your support today can help prevent that.

If you have other pets: Keep them separated while your new pet recovers. URI is contagious, even to vaccinated dogs, but with just 10 days of meds and rest, most pups bounce back quickly. 🏠

BARC is in urgent need of newspaper donations to help care for the hundreds of pets in our shelter. As of this morning, we’re housing 385 animals, and with no-appointment stray intake happening today, we expect even more pets to arrive.

Newspaper may seem simple, but it’s one of our most-used supplies. It helps us line kennels for small dogs, puppies, cats, and kittens. Keeping them clean, dry, and a little more comfortable while they wait for a home.

With our shelter approaching capacity, we’re going through it faster than ever. If you have newspapers to spare—extras from home, work, or your business—we’d be so grateful.

Cashew is a sweet, gentle soul who's ready to find his forever home! This handsome pup is 𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗱 and knows several commands like 𝘀𝗶𝘁, 𝗱𝗼𝘄𝗻, 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘆/𝘄𝗮𝗶𝘁, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗹—he’s a smart cookie, especially when treats are involved! 🍪🐾

𝗙𝘂𝗻 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝘁: Cashew doesn’t have bottom teeth, but that doesn’t stop him one bit from enjoying treats or squeaky toys. His goofy grin just makes him all the more charming! 💛

We’re starting today with 452 animals in our care—and just yesterday, we took in 99 new intakes. It’s only April, but the warmer months are already bringing an early surge in shelter intake, and we’re bracing for what summer could bring.

To put it plainly: we’re approaching capacity, and we need help.

The reality is hard, but we are not giving up and we’re committed to keeping Houston safe and caring for every pet who comes through our doors. Right now, we need our village—and that means you.

🐾 Adopt: Today kicks off our Waggy Wednesday + National Pet Day adoption promotion! All dogs 5 months and older are just $20 to adopt through Sunday.
🐾 Foster: Even a short-term foster makes a world of difference and opens up kennel space for incoming pets.
🐾 Rescue Partners: If you have room to take animals, please reach out to our team. Every life you pull gives another a better chance.
🐾 Volunteer: Help walk dogs, comfort cats, or assist with meet-and-greets—every action counts.

Hello everyone, my name is Tamera and I am a sweet and gentle pup looking for my forever home. My nose is shaped like a heart because I am full of love ❤️. I love to snuggle up in a blanket and curl up on the couch with my legs tucked under me. Sometimes when I'm relaxed, my tongue peeks out of my mouth 😋.
