🚨 UPDATE: Justice for the kitten abandoned and run over in Huffman.

Working together with our partners Office of Constable Alan Rosen, Harris County Constable Precinct 1 Lucie Siewe, 49, has been arrested and charged with two counts of animal cruelty after witnesses saw her abandon a kitten and drive away in her truck, striking the Kitten as she left.
The 3-month-old kitten, now named Alex, suffered a diaphragmatic hernia along with a transverse fracture of the right tibia and fibula as a result of the trauma. Our veterinary team performed a lifesaving surgery, and thankfully this brave little survivor continues to heal in our care.

The Houston SPCA will never stop working with law enforcement to protect innocent animals and hold abusers accountable.

📞 If you witness cruelty, please call 713-869-7722 or report online: houstonspca.org/report-animal-cruelty

This week marks the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, one of the most devastating natural disasters in U.S. history. The Houston SPCA played a critical role here in Houston with sheltering, and reuniting pets during a time of unimaginable loss.

Before the storm hit, 263 animals from the Louisiana SPCA were transported to the Houston SPCA for safety. Overnight, we created space, set up temporary kennels, and doubled up in foster homes. Following the news coverage after landfall, it became clear that if the animals had stayed there, they would have all surely died.

After the storm, our teams worked around the clock as buses of displaced families arrived in Houston from the Superdome. Many had brought their pets with them – a total of 400 were brought into our care. Many of our staff and volunteers recall the many days thereafter when tears of relief and joy filled our shelter as families were reunited with the dogs, cats, birds, snakes, and more after such loss.

Just weeks later, Hurricane Rita struck, and once again, our teams mobilized to provide emergency relief for animals and their owners who were forced to evacuate or lost everything in the storm.

These back-to-back disasters forever shaped how we respond to large-scale emergencies today and reinforced our commitment to being there for animals and their families when they need us most.

Our Story

Established in 1924, the Houston SPCA’s Campus For All Animals serves as the leading animal protection and rescue organizations in the country with the ability to care for the broadest range of animal species, types of abuse and injury, and magnitude of large-scale, multiple-animal cases – all in one location. They provide rescue and care for companion animals, horses and farm animals, and exotics while Houston SPCA’s Wildlife Center of Texas receives over 11,000 wild animals comprising over 360 species each year. The Houston SPCA impacts more than 50,000 animals each year, from owner-surrendered pets to found, rescued and displaced animals. We’re here to help animals in need—no matter how they get here.
