Special Pals has brought in 5 of the Shady Lane Park dogs.
39 dogs were found abandoned in the street. BARC and HPD are working together to find out who did this.
Right now the dogs in our care are settled, fed, and getting the care they need. Each dog will be spayed and neutered and then will be available for adoption. You will see the dogs we have in the comments.

An update on the 39 dogs brought to BARC from Shady Lane Park. 💜
We’ve seen the outpouring of concern and interest in these dogs, and we want to share an update on where things stand.
First, we want to recognize the people who helped get these dogs to safety. Street rescuers were already on site catching dogs before our team arrived. We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who stepped in to help.
📌 What happens to the dogs now?
➡ A total of 39 dogs were brought to BARC through Animal Enforcement and local street rescuers. Our medical team evaluated the dogs and performed routine wellness care upon intake. Many already have rescue placements lined up, and several puppies have already left through rescue or adoption.
Most of the remaining dogs are adults who must complete their legally required stray wait before they can move forward with placement.
📌 What about people who want to adopt one?
➡ We expect 10 dogs to be available for public adoption starting Saturday, October 24, at noon, on a first-come, first-served basis. We’ll share which dogs will be available tomorrow, so keep an eye on our page!

These 10 dogs have shown friendlier, more social dispositions. Other dogs who are more fearful or need additional grooming and support will have the opportunity to receive that care through our rescue partners. Availability depends on each dog’s status and readiness for placement, so please watch for updates.
📌 Is there an investigation?
➡ Abandoning a pet in Texas is a crime. BARC is assisting the Houston Police Department with its investigation into this matter. HPD is handling the investigation, and BARC will continue cooperating with its requests. There are no additional details to share at this time.
We’re grateful to see so many people rally around these 39 dogs. We also hope this attention shines a light on the many other pets at BARC who need adopters, fosters, and rescue support. We have hundreds of dogs and cats waiting for homes, and they deserve a chance to find their people, too.
