What is short, stout, and salt and pepper all over? Why, it's Charlie!

This sweet senior has the look of a Pit Bull with Basset Hound legs, but don't let those little legs fool you. Charlie has some serious hops! We're talking high enough that we may need to start looking into his basketball career. 😂

When he's not showing off his jumping skills, Charlie is happiest spending time with people. He'd make a great patio buddy, enjoys going for walks, and is always happy to wind down with some cuddles afterward.

He's also friendly with other dogs and has a wonderful temperament.

Charlie may be short and stout, but he's got plenty of personality packed into that little body. If you're looking for a fun, easygoing companion to join you for life's adventures and quiet evenings alike, come meet Charlie at Houston Humane Society.

Cheryl's connection to Houston Humane Society started at a dog wash in 1991. More than three decades later, animals are still a family affair. 🐾💙

When her youngest child turned 11, Cheryl's family was able to devote more time to volunteering. He went on to receive a bachelor's degree in animal science from Texas A&M, while her oldest child became a dog trainer.

This October marks 20 years of Cheryl regularly volunteering with Houston Humane Society. You can usually find her walking dogs on weekends, but she's also helped at events like our annual K9 Fun Run & Walk and lent a hand in our veterinary clinic.

She says, "Houston Humane Society is my Disney World! It's the happiest place on earth for me."

Rookie volunteer PJ also found his happy place walking dogs at Houston Humane Society.

He started volunteering in early 2026 and loves being hands-on with the animals, giving them exercise, attention, and love.

For PJ, those everyday interactions matter, "providing the animals with a little bit of hope, happiness and love each day while they wait for their forever home. Having a little bit of interaction with a human each day goes a long way, I believe.”

Seeing volunteers show up “day-in and day-out, rain or shine” inspires him to keep coming back.

And while PJ gives his time to the dogs, that time offers something in return, too.

"I am able to focus on just being present with the dogs and forget about whatever else is going on in my life at the time."

If you're thinking about volunteering, Cheryl encourages you to try it out. "Love is easy to give!"

PJ agrees: "You get much more back compared to what you give."

When Link arrived at Houston Humane Society, he weighed just 3.75 pounds and had a badly broken front leg. We weren’t sure what the next day would bring. 🐰💙

Link had been found alone in a Houston park by a family who took him in, kept him safe, and reached out to us for help.

His first night at the shelter was a difficult one. He wasn’t eating and was understandably scared, but by the next morning, he had started nibbling on his food. It was the first sign that this little rabbit was ready to fight.

Our veterinary and shelter teams got Link comfortable while determining the best way to treat his injured leg. Soon, he was feeling so much better that our biggest challenge was convincing him to slow down!

On July 16, Link underwent surgery to amputate his injured leg. It didn’t take long for him to adjust to life on three legs, and he quickly became a favorite among our shelter vet techs.

He also found some very special friends in volunteers Melinda and her daughters, Margaret and Madeline.

They come in every Tuesday to help care for and socialize our rabbits and mini mammals. When they heard Link’s story, they fell in love. After learning that special bedding could help keep him comfortable as a tripod, Margaret even taught herself how to sew so she could make custom bedding just for him.

Link’s recovery has taken a village, from the family who found him to our medical team, shelter staff, and volunteers who have been there every step of the way.

Today, Link weighs a healthy 5 pounds. He’s healed, neutered, learning to navigate life on three legs, and surrounded by people who adore him.

Stories like Link’s are possible because so many people choose to be part of that village. 💙

🗳️ Help us spread awareness of our mission by voting daily for Houston Humane Society during Houston Gives, now through September 14th.

Every vote helps to provide a temporary haven and medical care for pets like Link.

Keeping Pet Families Together Starts with Access to Care.

Today, our team served more than 80+ pets in the Houston community and the line was out the door. Families showed up because they love their pets and want to keep them healthy, happy, and by their side.

For hours, our incredible team worked to provide essential medical care, food and supplies, including rabies vaccinations, microchips, flea and heartworm prevention.

This is what the Houston Humane Society Pets for Life program is all about: breaking down barriers to veterinary care and pet resources so that cost, access, or circumstance doesn’t force a family to make the heartbreaking choice to give up a beloved pet.

The human-animal bond matters. Keeping pets with the people who love them matters. And programs like this make that possible.

But we can’t do it without you. 💙
Please consider donating to help us continue bringing accessible pet care and resources to communities that need them most. Your support helps keep families together and gives more pets the chance to remain safe, healthy, and loved at home.
🐶🐱 Together, we can keep pet families together.
