❤️‍🩹 TALLULAH’S LIFELINE: Why Spaying Can Save a Life 🐾

Yesterday, sweet Tallulah, a 10-year-old PomChi mix, came to Helena Vet Clinic feeling very, very sick.

Her family noticed that she was extremely lethargic, refusing to eat or drink, and experiencing abnormal vaginal discharge. We immediately began with an examination, in-house bloodwork, and X-rays. Her bloodwork showed significant abnormalities that strongly suggested her little body was fighting a serious infection.

Unfortunately, further diagnostics were outside of her family’s financial means at the time, so we provided as much supportive care as possible, including fluids, antibiotics, and vitamin B12, with hopes that she would begin feeling better.

But overnight, Tallulah declined.

When she returned to us this morning, we knew we needed to act quickly. She was lying completely on her side, barely lifting her head and struggling to even keep her eyes fully open.

Our team immediately jumped into action.

An ultrasound provided the answer we had been looking for: Tallulah had pyometra.

🩺 WHAT IS PYOMETRA?

Pyometra is a serious and potentially fatal infection of the uterus that can occur in female dogs who have not been spayed. Hormonal changes within the uterus can create an environment where bacteria can flourish, causing the uterus to fill with infected material.

Without treatment, the infection can progress rapidly and lead to sepsis, organ damage, uterine rupture, shock, and death.

Signs of pyometra can include:

🐾 Severe lethargy or weakness
🐾 Loss of appetite
🐾 Increased thirst or urination
🐾 Vomiting or diarrhea
🐾 Abdominal swelling or discomfort
🐾 Fever
🐾 Vaginal discharge — although discharge may NOT be present with a “closed” pyometra
🐾 Collapse or severe illness in advanced cases

For Tallulah, treatment meant one thing: emergency surgery to remove the infected uterus and ovaries.

And that is where something very special happened. ❤️

Helena Vet Clinic has a fund specifically designed to help animals facing extraordinary circumstances when their families simply cannot afford lifesaving treatment: our Lifeline Animal Fund.

After seeing how desperately Tallulah needed help, our clinic came together and voted to make her a Lifeline candidate.

This morning, Dr. Barnett took Tallulah into surgery and successfully removed her enlarged, infected uterus.

And our little fighter did phenomenally. 🥹❤️

Tallulah made it through surgery without complications and is now awake, resting comfortably, and recovering beautifully. She has gone from lying completely on her side and barely responding this morning to being sternal, alert, and already looking so much better.

Depending on how she continues to recover throughout the day, she may even be able to go home to her family tonight. 🏡🐾

Tallulah’s story also carries an incredibly important message.

Spaying isn’t only about preventing puppies. It can prevent life-threatening reproductive diseases like pyometra.

We understand that there are many reasons owners may hesitate to spay, including the cost of surgery. But a routine spay performed on a healthy dog is generally much safer, less complicated, and far less expensive than an emergency surgery on a critically ill patient.

Pyometra can happen quickly, and sometimes the first indication that something is wrong is when a dog becomes extremely sick.

If you have an intact female dog and aren’t sure when or whether she should be spayed, talk with your veterinarian. Your veterinarian can help you make an informed decision based on her age, breed, health, and individual circumstances.

Today, we’re simply grateful.

Grateful Tallulah’s family brought her back when she declined.
Grateful our team recognized how urgently she needed help.
Grateful for our Lifeline Animal Fund.
And most importantly, grateful that this sweet girl gets another chance. ❤️‍🩹

Keep fighting, Tallulah. You have an entire clinic rooting for you. 🐾❤️

🐾✨ Meet Maci Mae! ✨🐾

At just 12 weeks old, this sweet Cocker Spaniel already has a very important mission ahead of her. 💕

Maci Mae only has one more round of puppy vaccines before she’s fully vaccinated, and she’s already hard at work learning the basics through obedience training. Once she’s old enough, she’ll continue her journey at professional service dog training school, where she’ll begin training to become an epileptic seizure service dog.

Her future partner? A very excited little girl who can’t wait to welcome Maci Mae into her life. ❤️ The bond these two will build is going to be something truly special, and we feel so honored to be a small part of Maci Mae’s journey from playful puppy to life-changing companion.

Please join us in wishing this precious girl the very best as she grows, learns, and prepares for the incredible work ahead. We can’t wait to watch you blossom, Maci Mae! 🐶🎓💙

✨ Introducing… Miss “No-Name Yet!” ✨🐾

This teeny tiny sweetheart stopped by Helena Veterinary Clinic for her VERY FIRST puppy visit, and we’re officially in love! 💕 At just 7 weeks old and weighing only 2.8 pounds, she may be little, but she’s already got a HUGE personality (and has mastered the art of stealing hearts 💖).

Welcome to the HVC family, sweet girl! We can’t wait to watch you grow. 🩺🐶
