🐾 September is Animal Pain Awareness Month🐾

Did you know that our pets are experts at hiding pain? In the animal kingdom, showing weakness can mean vulnerability—so many of our companions have become masters of disguise when it comes to discomfort.

That’s why this month is dedicated to shining a light on recognizing the subtle signs of pain in our furry friends. Unlike people, pets can’t tell us when something hurts. Instead, they may:

* Move more slowly or stiffly
* Avoid jumping on furniture or climbing stairs
* Show changes in appetite or sleep
* Withdraw from play or social interaction
* Vocalize differently, or sometimes stay unusually quiet

Even small changes in behavior can be a signal that something isn’t right. By learning to spot these signs early, we can step in to ease their discomfort and improve quality of life.

At FurWell, we believe every pet deserves to live comfortably, free from untreated pain. If you’ve noticed changes in your pet’s habits, mobility, or demeanor, September is the perfect reminder to schedule a check-up. Together, we can give them the comfort and care they need. ❤️

🐾Say hello to the handsome Hampton! 🐾

This sweet boy came in to see Dr. Dave for his annual check-up yesterday, where he had his annual work done, updated his vaccinations, and went home all set with his NexGard COMBO* preventative. ✅

Hampton was such a brave and well-behaved gentleman during his visit that he earned himself a delicious Churu treat as a reward. Just look at that adroable, happy face!
😻😺

We’re so proud of you, Hampton! Thanks for making our day brighter with your visit. 💛🐾

*NexGard COMBO for cats is a monthly, broad-spectrum topical preventative used to protect against and treat various parasites, including fleas, ticks, heartworm disease, roundworms, hookworms, and the only approved medication for controlling tapeworms in cats.

🐾 Happy International Dog Day! 🐾
Today we paw-ty in honor of our four-legged family members. 💕 Whether they're fetching our slippers, wiggling in excitement, or being our cozy couch companions, dogs make our lives infinitely better.

Founded in 2004 by animal advocate Colleen Paige, International Dog Day, celebrated every August 26, encourages us to spread love by adopting shelter dogs, supporting nonprofits, and appreciating the hardworking pups among us 🦮❤️
How to celebrate today?
• Treat your dog to something special, perhaps a pampered grooming session, homemade treat, or a fun adventure outdoors!
• Support local shelters by volunteering, donating, or helping spread the word about adoption opportunities.

If you’ve got a busy day, work commitments, or even a school bus schedule to juggle, you can leave your pet with us and our team will take care of everything. 🐾 While you handle life, we’ll address your pet’s needs and keep them loved on until you’re able to swing back by.

Thanks for brightening our day, Pepper, you’ve officially stolen some hearts at Barkingham today! 💖

🐾 Because Every Pet Deserves a Vet Who Truly Listens 🐾

When you walk through our doors, you’re not just another appointment, you and your pet are family. Dr. Dave Caldwell has a gift for making even the most nervous pets (and pet parents!) feel comfortable. His attention to detail, willingness to take the time needed, and genuine compassion mean that every visit is about more than just medicine. It’s about trust, understanding, and care that lasts long after you leave.

Maxwell’s recent visit was a perfect example of how a thorough approach and a caring heart can make all the difference for a senior pet’s health and happiness. 💚

Dog Parks: Fun or Frenzy? 🐕😲
Dog parks can be an awesome outlet for energy and social time, but they’re not risk-free.
Different sizes, temperaments, and training levels all in one space? It can lead to bite wounds, scuffles, or stress.

Before you go:
✅ Make sure your dog is confident in group settings
👀 Keep a close eye and step in if play gets too rough
🕓 Skip peak hours if your pup gets overwhelmed easily

Want to brush up on dog park etiquette?
The AKC has a great guide to help set you and your dog up for success:

Let’s keep the park fun and safe for everyone! 🐾

Give some thought to whether or not a dog park environment is a great match for your dog's personality, play style, health, and training.

🌟 Say hello to Spinx! 🌟

This tiny ball of orange fluff came in for a recheck at FurWell at Barkingham yesterday, and we couldn’t resist snapping a few photos! Just look at that face! 😍

At just under 2 months old, Spinx has already had a few urinary troubles, but don’t let his size fool you, he’s a fighter! We’ve got a treatment plan in place and high hopes that this sweet boy will be feeling 100% in no time. 💪🐾

Spinx also received some kitten vaccines during his visit, and in true Spinx fashion, he paid us back with the cutest little kisses. 💋💛

Help us send him all the healing vibes!

🚫🥩 Toxic Foods & Table Scraps : A Mid-Summer Reminder 🐾

Summer BBQs are fun for us…but can be dangerous for our pets. Some foods we enjoy are toxic or hazardous to animals and even small bites can lead to serious illness or emergency surgery.

⚠️ Common Toxins:
• Onions & garlic
• Grapes & raisins
• Chocolate
• Alcohol

⚠️ Obstruction Hazards:
• Corn cobs
• Cooked bones

🤢 Fatty foods can also trigger pancreatitis, and swallowing the wrong thing can cause foreign body obstructions both of which are painful, dangerous and can affect both dogs and cats.

📢 Pro Tip: Ask guests not to share food with your pets, and keep those plates out of reach! Also be mindful of open trashcans or receptacles that your pet can access.

❓Not sure what’s safe?
The Pet Poison Helpline is a great resource: https://www.petpoisonhelpline.com/poisons/

When in doubt, it’s best to stick to pet-safe treats. ❤️
